Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. See a 12-minute film combining 3-D images and close-up footage; walk along the galleries, the fortified walls and the north ramparts; discover the museum of masonry and many other attractions. "If you are interested in historic site, this is a must see. While there is some controversy among medieval site purist over the authenticity of Carcassonne Cite, you cannot go away without a true sense of what medieval cities were like. Before entering the Cite, take the Le Petite train ride around ..."the entire length of the outer walls. The 7 euro price is worth the 20 minute narrated ride. Save your legs for walking through the Cite streets and if stairs are not a problem, tour the ramparts, at a small fee. Beware that once inside the walls, you will walk by countless shops and restaurants. Food of all kinds and prices are available so shop around until you find what you want, whether it be a hambuger or a 3 course meal. You must spend a few minutes inside the cathedral. Beautiful stained glass and magnificent architecture. The WC's are very crude. Use the restaurant facilities for modern toilets.

"Beautiful architecture. The stained glass is beautiful. I was particularly stunned by the pieta sculpture. The agony depicted on the face of the Virgin Mary is so real, I was taken aback. Located inside the medieval city of Carcassonne."
