So we wandered through the castle expecting at least some explanatory signs as to which room you're in and how it was used, but there were very very few of those. There are elaborate photo displays explaining how the castle was restored (in several languages), but that's hardly what draws most visitors. My advice: if you can't take a conducted tour, make a point of seeking out the audio tour, otherwise you'll leave wondering what you missed. " More >

  "Having visited the Castle in the last week, and having just read some of the recent reviews, we felt compelled to put another perspective. When we arrived, there were brochures on the Castle available right outside the ticket office. My husband and I actually commented on this, as the brochures ..."were available in 12-14 different languages, which was the most number of translations we've ever seen at a tourist site. There were also clear notices at the ticket office about the availability of audio guides in varying languages. We both took one, and commented on the helpfulness of the explanations, and wondered aloud why people would visit the Castle without either going with a tour guide, or using the audio guide. The audio guide gives detailed information on virtually every room available to visit. Both the audio guides and the explanations at the Castle give some emphasis to the architect Bodo Ebhardt. The countryside on the southern route is more mountainous - we detoured to Le Grand Balon but don't regret it. The villages going north are delightful - we really liked Ribeauville best of a..."ll for plenty of life, beautiful shops & buildings, nesting storks, a stack of restaurants & cafes and wineries of course. If you don't have long in this region I really recommend Ribeauville as the 'must see' town and next time we come to the area I would stay here rather than in Colmar. " More >
