The Gallery has been named by ArtFund in 2014 as one of five most 'unmissable' Art Galleries in the UK. This year's Summer Exhibition, 'Paradise Regained' tells the story of how World War 1 experiences affected Spencer's work as he struggled to regain his artistic equilibrium and vision. Vivid dreamlike depictions of often biblical or spiritual events, re-created in a Cookham setting, are displayed alongside moving depictions of wartime memories. Some truly wonderful Spencer paintings, on loan from the Tate and also from private collectors, add to those selected from the Gallery's own major collection. The Exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see these great paintings at the heart of the village where the artist lived and worked. The exhibition has attracted visitors from all over the world. The Gallery supports family visits with activity sheets and books to keep children happily occupied. Group visits can be arranged with talks and/or short walks to the scenes where Spencer painted. « less
