This is continuing to be reconstructed as a historical and educational site by the Boothbay Harbor and Southport Island community. It was an amazing vista from the vacation home of late actress, Margaret Hamilton, who is most notable for her film role as the wicked witch in “The Wizard of Oz”. A legendary tale of this lighthouse, which may or not be true, is that a bachelor keeper grew lonesome and went ashore to find himself a wife. He did so, and she moved into the Cuckold with him. She soon became bored and badgered her husband to find a piano for their tiny home. He diligently searched and found a piano, which he bought and transported to the light station – no easy task. Once the piano was settled in, it soon became clear to him that his wife only knew how to play one song…..which she played….day and night. Between the isolation of the station and the repetition of this song, he apparently went “around the bend”. He took an axe to his wife AND the piano, thus murdering both! Kudos to the community for keeping this lighthouse alive and a part of the rich history of mid-coastal Maine! « less
