"I've lost count of the number of department stores (depato) and shopping complexes in this area and if you're traveling with a female companion, remember to bring a few credit cards because Shinjuku like nearby Shibuya and Harajuku is a shoppers paradise.
"
"This little area is filled with smoky Yakitori joints and although I've read of reviews of people suffering from xenophobia or bad service, we were well looked after by the shopkeeper and the jolly patrons who were accommodating. If you're a nonsmoker like me, many of the shops are smoking friendly ..."even indoors.
We headed for the busiest looking Yakitori shop and weren't disappointed. They usually provide English menus and just point out what you want. Prices were reasonable.

"If a man can't find anything he needs in the isetan men's building, it probably doesn't exist. From contemporary clothing, streetwear to man bags - Isetan would probably put some of the biggest department stores in the west to shame. All the famous European labels are represented including niche wes..."tern and japanese brands can be found there.
The food market in the basement is another attraction in itself. There are glass showcases of what appears to be mouth watering wagashi (japanese sweets and confectionary) lovingly displayed or packaged. Although costly, do try some of them especially the red bean rice cakes.
