A unique personal collection of over 400 Classic British cars, commercials and motoring memorabilia. Please note there may be some dust and oil among the cars as the owner is not as young as he was and cannot get around them as often as he would like. Volunteer cleaners very welcome!

I actually thought I had already reviewed this, but it turns out I haven't so here goes. I stopped by here one weekend, finally decided to visit. For a long time I never knew this place even existed. I was pleasantly surprised, the collection was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. A huge amount of British cars... More

Hello Draco and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are very pleased you enjoyed your visit. Its true that some of the cars are on raised stands. We do this to maximise the space available as unfortunately the local authority will not permit us to extend our floor space, so the choice is either a... More

This museum is a must if you like to reminisce over the old British car that you used to own. If you like Morris Minors then there are around 36 of them plus around 400 other old British cars in un- restored condition. A dream of days gone by.

Great to see one mans passion turn into a massive collection. Would be great to see more of the cars restored but the cost would be huge and would then incur a far greater entry fee. Most kiwis will find connection with at least a couple of different cars on display without having to be a car nut.

Definitely not a museum. A few genuinely interesting or unique cars but when you consider the legacy Britain have given the motor industry this collection is pretty poor. At least half of the "collection" are little more than scrap. In the information age there is very little information about the cars, which I thought was the greatest crime. It is... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am disappointed that apparently you found little or nothing to enjoy and that Ian Hope's Backyard Museum wasn't to your taste - but I do hope you nevertheless enjoyed your trip to beautiful Hawkes Bay. You don't say what information you wanted to see. but every car is clearly... More

The British Car Museum, Napier Truly a remarkable find, tucked away on the edge of Napier on the road to Cape Kidnappers is this real gem of a motor car collection. Do not though for one minute think that it is all going to be laid out with meticulous signage, pristine polished chrome, and everything in chronological order for this... More

Thanks for the review and may I firstly say its great that you 'get' that Ian Hope's No. 1 priority is preserving these relics of British motoring history for future generations to enjoy. So, if the presentation is imperfect and/or a little amusing, well ...so be it. Ian is not a computer whizz kid (he is a retired motor mechanic... More

We thought this private collection was amazing. Over 400 cars under one roof, collected by Ian Hope and sourced from throughout NZ. Be patient when you ring the door horn, It's a big place to get from one end to the other. The entry fee is extremely reasonable. We had a lovely chat with Ian, he played us an Aussie... More

An extensive & eclectic collection of cars from the UK. Personally I'm not a fan of British cars but I am a car nut so was keen to see one mans collection, expecting to see some gems & there are some. On leaving I was left with mixed feelings. Admiration for amassing this collection. Frustration & some sadness. The majority... More

Thank you Chris for taking the time to post a review of the British Car Museum. The museum's name does, of course, give a clear pointer to the type of cars in our collection (i.e. British) and I would certainly go along with your view that those without an interest in British cars may well not enjoy it as much... Well it certainly isn't the usual immaculately curated museum but it is an astonishing place. If you love British cars then you must visit. Ian, the owner, has an unbelievable passion for his collection and how he has managed to assemble this collection under one roof defies belief. Not only are there hundreds of cars but he also has collections... More

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write a review of Ian's museum. He was delighted that you enjoyed your visit so much and that you appreciate the passion he has for the collection. An amazing collection of British Vehicles and memorabilia. It bought back a lot of memories of times when we owned some of these cars during different stages of our lives. If you are ever in Hawkes Bay it is well worth a look.

Today we had a visit to the British Car Museum and what a treat that was, so many cars, so much to see. This is a unique collection to visit and don't expect the usual, no not this place but so worth the visit, come on lets support this wonderful collection and the man who made it happen.
