Description:

The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches,...

The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence.Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. The basilica has also an important cultural function. It’s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels!

Shocking. We saw just outside and was a fairly large and original building. Next time we will go to see it in more detail, we were looking forward. To recommend.

This is a minor basilica with associations to King Leopold of Belgium (one of the most famous persons from this country apart from Tin-Tin), it's located atop a hill so you have to climb a bit. The main attraction, if you're an architecture lover, is the Art Deco style of the church building which is a very different experience from... More

This "modern" basilica is located a bit of a way out of city center. But, it is worth the effort to get there. I took a taxi that cost me less than 24E for the round trip. Having just attended Mass the day before at St. Michael's, I was a bit shocked to see the difference....should not have been, but... More

I really liked this and managed to get some great photos. I would recommend a visit to see this place if you are able to make time. Obviously you need an interest in this type of building but I enjoyed it.

Although this church is only 50-60 years old, it is one of the best looking churches in Brussels. The church is made of brick and concrete and not stone like old churches. It has two thin towers and a copper dome which dominates the skyline. This church is a must visit if you are in Brussels.

This is on the hop on hop off bus route. You are dropped ;off at the back gate and have to walk up and around the Basilica. Basilica was commissioned by the Friends of the National Basilica of the Sacred heart. beneath the church there are meeting rooms, a thetre, a chapel. Everything is very art deco. Not a very... It looks nearby when you exit the metro station but it is still quite a walk to the majestic building of the basilica. Fortunately, that walk runs through a less crowded and traffic-low semi-park. Once inside the building, it takes quite some time to orientate because of the impressive vastness. Also, there are many side rooms and chapels where you... More

A rather stark and gloomy place, if impressive. It is possible to visit the tower and there is a restaurant in the basement. The place had a pre-War gothic splendour but is a bit a trek to reach, not to be attempted from central Brussels on foot unless you want a long and gloomy walk.
