Owner description: The Koekelberg Basilica ranks fifth among the world's largest churches, after the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Paix in Yamoussokro on the Ivory Coast, St Peter's in Rome, St Paul's in London and Santa Maria Dei Fiori in Florence.Today, the church is in the first place a place of prayer for peace. The church is still used for celebrations of the parish or for big national celebrations. But the basilica is more than that. The basilica has also an important cultural function. It’s a magnificent Art Deco monument, there are two museums, there are yearly different expositions and you can enjoy a wonderful view over Brussels!

The scale of this church and the time it took to build (70 years!) is mind-boggling. There isn't anything else in the area to see, although it's a maybe worth a detour if you're off to the Atomium. It looks impressive as you walk towards it and it does have a kind of brooding presence. The interior however disappointed me... More

To be honest. I followed the advices on TripAdvisor . I stayed outside the building to admire the impressive architecture that I like it.

There were very few tourists when we arrived. It was very nice to be there and walk around. The weather was really good and we enjoyed being there and taking pictures of the church and Brussels. The view of the city was amazing!

I've been told that the Koekelberg Basilica is a landmark that is grossly ignored by visitors to Brussels... and it shouldn't be! I was entranced by the unique architecture of the basilica; the art deco influences make for a truly unique church in contrast to the multitude of Gothic / Renaissance / Middle Age churches found all over Europe. And... More

I really recommend a visit, and definitely pay the 5 euros and go up the tower - much better views than the Atomium! the basilica really is something else and will definitely be very different to any other church or basilica you will have seen!

From the tower you can have a brilliant view of almost half of Belgium, if the weather is clear, which wasn´t the case when we visited. But the interior is worth the visit, with a clear art déco style architecture. Cannot really say whether I like it or not, but it is truely special. Go for a walk through the... More

Beautiful Basilica, the panoramic view of Brussels at the top is amazing. - And it has an elevator to the top! This is a very large church. Art Deco, and I loved the two domes. Stop and spend some time in Elisabeth Park in the front of the Basilica

This church is one of the landmarks of Brussels. Because it is built on a small hill, you see it from far away. I’ve passed the church many times over the years and finally decided to visit it. I would not call the basilica a beautiful church, but it is certainly an impressive building. The church has a dark and... More

The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic Minor Basilica and parish church in Brussels. The church was dedicated to the Sacred Heart, inspired by the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur in Paris. Symbolically King Leopold II laid the first stone of the basilica in 1905 during the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Belgian independence. The construction was... More
