I visited this museum mainly to see the Marlene Dumas exhibition which was excellent. The one aspect that stands out is the use of natural light. It was a very wet dull day but the light was so well used that all paintings and exhibits were displayed to their full potential.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Great collection. Lovely space in which to view the art. Lovely grounds. Quite pricey though.

I frequently visit the Fondation Beyeler for the art exhibitions which must rank with the best in the world. The architecture by Renzo Piano and its setting is beautiful.

This museum is not cheap, so I was extremely lucky that our friend got us cheap tickets to an event focusing on the Marlene Dumas exhibit. Overall that exhibit took us about an hour to go through, and the pamphlet gave some pretty good information, so it was worth the trek out there from Basel. Still, browsing around the collection,... Too far out of town and not my cup of tea on damp hot August day. The tram ride out was the best bit of the trip. Modern art? Modern building. Only positive point was that it is the only museum in Basel open on a Monday. Hence the only reason for my visit. Staff pompous and officious.

We went there expecting to enjoy the Monet Water Lilies, but after we paid our 20 francs, they told us that half the museum was closed for renovation, and another featured exhibit had just closed. We had only one small exhibit to view (and it was interesting), but we didn't think we should have been charged for full price for... More

You don't need to be a passionate art lover to like this place. The architecture of the building and the park around are already quite promising. The permanent collection has masterpieces seen in text art books. And any special exhibition is very deeply thought through and the curators are able to get pieces of unique standing. Definitely worth a detour.

So far as I know, Switzerland has two Renzo Piano designed museums: the Klee Zentrum in Bern and this building just outside of Basel. They are both distinctive, much more so than the older Menil building in Houston or the newer Broad and the follow-on Resnick buildings at the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (haven’t yet been to the... The special exhibition on view now is expertly curated and comprehensive in scope - the work of Marlene Dumas. A previous show I saw, also excellent, was works by Jean-Michel Basquiat. The pieces from permanent collection on display are top works by top artists - Art 100! - hung sparingly and intelligently. The architecture of the museum is an additional... More

There' s always a special exhibition running. Besides they have very good permanent collection. The building itself is great. Easy to access by public transportation. A must if you love art!!!!
