I rent a kayak in Okarito, there is just one place to do so. I loved it so much. I had very little experience and I was on my own. But the service was absolutely fantastic. The equipment was very good, proper safety talk and a very good explanation of where to go. There was a map on the kayak... More

A Kiwi showing an overseas visitor around his island. I had done the Whatoroa Jet Boat / White Heron tour before, so I researched other options / reviews & so phoned Paula & Swade for a Boat booking & accommodation. Donovan's Store that evening for a very intimate Arts Trust "Delaney & Williams" Concert, which totally blew me away. I... More

I had a beautiful time in Okarito, one of my favourite spots in NZ so far. You need to go and see for yourself (but don't just "touch'n'go, spend some days there! :) ). The boat trip was so informative and peaceful. Swade is a bird encyclopedia and, even more important, he loves the place (who wouldn't) and what he's... More

There is little I can add to the review by archeologyman. My husband and I are of the 60's generation also. This trip and place brought back memories of backpacking Europe and living on a beach in the Florida Keys. We are not birders but Paula and Swade could not be more informative and helpful. The bird life on the... More

We were going to Okarito because we were booked on a Kiwi watching trip (see separate report) . As our departure from the UK came closer I was getting worried because we just couldn't find any accommodation in Okarito. When we arrived there we understood why. It is about ten houses and a flock of Paradise Shelduck wandering down the... More

Because they are a part of the Okarito Community, Paula was able to find us a bach when we'd heard that there was no available accommodation at the time we needed it. Weather was pretty wet, but Swade was able to find a "window of opportunity" to enable us to see the lagoon and understand something of the importance of... More

This kayak rental was the highlight of my trip on the west Coast. The setting of the lagoon is abolutely gorgeous, and the equipment is top-notch, which is not always the case with kayak rentals. I could not give this attraction a higher rating. A must-do in the Franz Josef area.

We joined Swade on his boat tour of the Okarito Lagoon after staying a cozy night in their Kiwi Cottage (bach). We were fortunate to have a perfectly still May morning with fresh snow on the Southern Alps which provide a spectacular backdrop to the gorgeous little settlement of Okarito. Swade took us out for 2 hours around the lagoon,... More

A great place for novice Kayaks as you paddle along the lagoon and into its tributaries. It's a birdwatchers paradise. Note that the lagoon is very susceptible to strong winds so call ahead before making the drive to Okarito. the owner (Chris) does a thorough briefing on the do's and dont's and even provides you with a kayak shirt to... My wife and I had the great pleasure of experiencing the Okarito Lagoon with Swade on an Early Bird tour. It was well worth getting up a bit earlier to experience the breathtaking views and seeing the varied flora and fauna at that time of the morning. The stillness of the water enabled us to take great photos of the... More
