Madu River is a wetland, near the Small town "Balapitiya" along the Colombo Galle highway. This is the point where the Estuary of the Madu river. The river flows through a terrain where it creates a large number of islands, and the eco system creates a beautiful wetland. The hotels around provide boat rids through the canals created at a good cost. And there are loads of places to stay, dine and wine.

It was worth every penny. Immensely enjoyed sailing through the mangrove caves and the scenic beauty it offered. 1.5 hours sail taking us to the fish spa, and other islands. awesome experience.

Before booking a boat trip on Madu Ganga River you should clarify who your guide is and whether he speaks English. Furthermore you should ascertain that all spots you see on a written tour description and all entrance fees etc. are included. We had a bad experience with Sanuthi Boat House, ending up with our Tuc Tuc driver as organisor... More

When you have a car and driver for three weeks, you come to trust his suggestions, even though in the back of your mind you KNOW that there are kickbacks when you are steered to certain attractions and/or restaurants. It is the system, and it works for the most part. Compared to the terrible massage experience we had at Suwamedura... More

Before we took our safari we had great fun reading all reviews. From great to terrible. From 1500 to 5000 rupees per person. No need to get screwd if you know how it works. It seems there are 8 companies with a licence and numberous boats. The biggest 3 have deals with touroperators where they are sqeezed by the quantity.... More

The boat driver convinced me for 1 hr boat ride instead of 30 min boat ride. Price obviously was double. Later, he wanted me to get off the boat on to the many islands for walking, fish massage etc and I refused as it is extra payment for those services. In 30 min he dropped me back and claims that... Our guide took us here on our last full day in Sri Lanka. It seemed OK but with hindsight I think it is an overpriced tourist trap. We had our own boat but 7,000 rupees (rather the US$60 as initially offered) was probably too much. The smell of diesel was overpowering at times. We visited the 'normal' spots: the cinnamon... The madu river has about 21 small island according to our boat driver and the safari was a nice experience for a one time ride , during the safari you can visit the cinnamon island ,local temple and a fish massage place from near the river, the ride through the mangroves adds nice touch to the safari , cause these... If you want to see wildlife this is the tour. 6 foot long Monitor lizards, Cormorants, Kingfishers, humming bird and large fruit bats. Also locals showing how cinnamon is processed manually (on the main island), shrimp/prawn catching, buddist prayer islands, tunnels of mangrove roots. Great morning tour

We went for a boat safari on the river as part of our stay in Galle. It was a good experience sighting monitors and crocodiles in the river. The boat ride took us through mangroves which was a different experience. We saw some small crocodiles along the way...our 'guide', or the guy driving the motorboat took us to many places... More
