The river flows through a terrain where it creates a large number of islands, and the eco system creates a beautiful wetland. The hotels around provide boat rids through the canals created at a good cost. And there are loads of places to stay, dine and wine. « less

We had an enjoyable boat ride on the Madu river, a young boy had a pet monkey for the children to feed and hold but as soon as another boat arrived the monkey was snatched back!! And yes of course we had paid him!! The Mangoves were lovely and the Cinamon demonstration was very interesting and of course we had... More

I can only reiterate what other recent reviewers have said - boring and by Sri Lanka standards very expensive for what you see or do. If you still want to go then if you have a group of 8 and can get a good deal where for the money it is worth it to you to cruise around a river... More

I only can absolutely agree with the previous reviewer. The differences were that we did not pay directly – it was included in the tour package and that we even were not taken to the temple island! The boat was exceptionally noisy, fuel fumes surrounded us all the time, boat engine had problems with starting all the times and at... More

A lovely 2 hour trip on the river looking for wildlife in the form of birds, lizards and crocs. We visited several small islands on our trip – a fish farm where you can partake in a foot massage by the fish. Totally freaked me out but my husband really enjoyed the experience. We held a baby croc and spent... More

In my opinion, this Madu River boat tour from Captain's Boat house was nothing short of a scam and a rip off. We saw absolutely nothing of any interest. It was ridiculously expensive, lasted less than an hour and we saw no animals. We entered the covered canopy area of the mangrove (which they show you in the photo in... More

we did the madhu ganga boat ride through Captain's Boat House. Suggestion is to go early morning (8am) best time to spot water monitors and birds. The guide was knowledgeable and quite friendly. He patiently lets you take photos of the birds. We also did Fish Foot Spa at one of the places it was a great experience. They also... More

Pottering about in a small boat among mangrove swamps, seeing sand extraction by divers working off a small boat and weaving among elaborate prawn nets strung across the river.... all interesting. Throw in a few large water monitors and fascinating blue jellyfish, purple faced leaf monkeys and lots of kingfishers and you have a recipe for a great hour on... More

As a group of 6, we had a small motor boat to ourselves on the ride on the backwaters of river Madu. The duration was about 1-1.25hr in total. Local Fishing style was on display prominently. We were able to spot a lot of birds and a few animals including a 2m Monitor lizard who posed nicely for the camera.... More

Interesting excursion especially seeing the local prawn farming. Stops off at a fish farm for a spot of fishy foot massage, a cinnamon island where you can see how cinnamon sticks are prepared and an island with a small Buddhist temple. Each stop required some sort of donation, which I was ill prepared for and struggled to find appropriate change... More
