Summer is now firmly here to stay in the Cairngorms so why not take a visit to see Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer in their natural habitat. Summer time is the time for shedding that thick winter coat, grazing and putting on weight for the reindeer as well as growing your new antlers for the year. Visits go every day at 11am and 2.30pm (additional 3.30 in July & August) at this time of year, follow a reindeer herder as you make your way up to the mountain enclosure, walk amongst reindeer, stroking and feeding them as the herder tells you more about them. Situated in the centre of the Cairngorms National Park, you will also enjoy beautiful views of the Cairngorm Mountains. The walk takes around 20 minutes and will cross some rough and muddy ground on the mountainside so make sure you’ve got some sturdy footwear and some nice cosy layers! Fancy something a wee bit different? During the summer we run half day reindeer treks across the lower slopes of the Cairngorms with an experienced herder. You will get the opportunity to lead your own reindeer as well as join onto one of our daily hill trips. Don't fancy the hill trip? For those less able, from Easter to New Year, we have a small group of reindeer in the paddock at the Centre itself. For younger visitors, there is a quiz, you can make your own badge, or make an antler headband.

Do not be satisfied just by visiting the reindeers in the paddock! We highly recommend the hill trip experience where you can meet the majestic, yet gentle creatures up close and personal in their natural home. Our guide, the young lady (unfortunately we really missed her name) was really into what she was doing, and making the experience fun too.... More

It is well worth going to visit the herd if you are anywhere in the Highlands, the chance to be amongst the beautiful Reindeer is a unique experience, and to know they are cared for so well, and happy in their environment, which is incredibly like their native land is just one never to be forgotten. We went once thinking... More

This was a lovely opportunity to get close to these beautiful, and gentle creatures. The Centre has a paddock with 3 or 4 reindeer in, you can stroke them and also can be given the opportunity to feed them. These are a small number of the larger herd that if you are more agile you can be taken to see.... More

We hiked up the hill to see the reindeer herd with our 5 and 7 year old sons. The hike was easy, yet adventurous. It was surreal to be standing in the middle of a huge herd of reindeer. The kids loved feeding and stroking these gorgeous creatures. Once in a lifetime experience not to be missed!

You must must must go here if you are anywhere near Aviemore!! We drove up from Pitlochry and it was well worth it. Did the hill visit with my kids - age 9, 7 and 2 (in a carrier). Fairly easy walking but need sturdy footwear. Once you meet the reindeer though it is all worthwhile with loads of them... More

Fun visit for the whole family. Need to be able to walk about 20 minutes on uneven terrain. Educational-great lesson to see how we can save the world, one step at a time.

We took the walking tour that leads you to the lower pasture where the Male reindeer were being kept. The walk is about a half a mile and is down into a valley and then up to the pasture. We were able to make the walk with no adverse effects and we are seniors and weigh a bit more than... More

I was so excited I felt like a big kid. The hill trip is around twenty mins on to the lower slopes of the Cairngorms. you do need decent footwear and midge repellent. These beautiful creatures are so soft, I came away with my head buzzing with information. These are truly fascinating animals and roam freely in their natural environment.... More

We were staying in Aviemore for a few days travelling around and stumbled on this place on a map. We thought we would take a look after a rather depressing and boring steam train ride (I have reviewed that as well if you are interested). Wished we had dumped the train and come here earlier in the day. We were... More
