Pichavaram Mangrove forest is a convenient addition if you are planning a Pondicherry vacation. It is a convenient 75km drive from Pondicherry on the East Coast Road. If you choose to take the public transport, you should do Pondicherry to Chidambaram. Pichavaram is 13 kms from Chidambaram. I was told this is the second largest mangrove forest in India, next... My partner and I had an amazing time here. We left Pondy at 1:30pm and got here at 3:30pm, which was a good time since it was not too hot and allowed us 2 hours for the boat ride. We rented a row boat, which costs Rs 320 for a 2 hour / 2 km ride. When we got on... More

Its a bit of a drive from Pondi. But worth it if you are a serenity and nature lover..It has been decently preserved as yet; hope it remains so..The boat ride into the mangroves is very calm, quiet and enjoyable

We clubbed a visit to this place with our pondicherry visit. With an hour's drive, I would strongly recommend this place if you are visiting Pondicherry. The mangrove forest were totally new experience for us. Although had some problem talking to the boat guy as we do not speak tamil. You can take a 2 /4 seater row boat or... More

Had heard about this, but was able to make it last week. Great place. Miles of back waters and mangroves -and riding though them was awesome. Row boats allows you to explore more into multiple mangrove forests, while motor boat can go through only one or two. The waters are serene and makes for far better experience than in many... More

15 km from town 10 of which are on a quieter rural road. Arrived at 8am opening time. Not too hot. Took an hour on a row boat for 160rs. That was enough for 'solo' me. With co. may have gone further if deeper meant better/different? Very little English from the rower but a friendly chap, kept hinting for a... More

Hire a boat ride for a full trip around the mangroves. Takes about 1hr. If sunny be sure to carry water and a hat or umbrella. Becomes abit tiring and hot. There are restrooms and restaurants (with basic food).

Took a 2 hour speed boat ride into the mangroves, must see and beautiful experience. An awesome beach secluded away was the cherry on the top. Strongly recommend.

A an excellent place for boating. This is the 2nd largest mangrove forest in the world after Sunderbans measuring about 2800 Hectares. It literally dwarfs you. We took a motor boat for an hour ride. We had an excellent guide in the form of our motorman Tamizh. After the 2004 tsunami the government is zealiously protecting the forest. Both row... More

This is a good place to visit once. It's 10 km interior from the main road. Don't go for motor boat. Go for a row boat. You can enjoy the beauty of it.
