We travelled most of the way to the cliff houses by public transport from Beijing and it took several hours on the 919 and 920 buses. We learned about these caves from the "day trips from Beijing" section of the Lone Planet Beijing guide. Our Beijing trip highlight would definitely be the visit to this mysterious place - 古崖居 (Ancient Cave Dwelling - Gu Ya Ju) at Yan Qing County. This site is easily accessible with well maintained paths, railings, etc. . The dwelling rooms contain horse troughs, niches for alters, and kangs. A kang is a firebox that channels smoke under a bed that is used both for sitting on and for sleeping at night. The smoke keeps the kang warm even in the cold winters. All that remains... More
