Owner description: Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift and enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over the world. Twenty acres of outstanding woodland plants include not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites such as camellia, pieris, azalea and magnolia. Other trees and shrubs take the flowering season on into the autumn along with an inspiring miscellany of bulbs, perennials, climbers, water plants and ferns, many rare and unusual, many down to earth and familiar, all interesting and beautiful in their diverse ways. A spectacular coastal and island panorama can be enjoyed from the easily accessible cliff top viewpoint. Visitors are welcome every day and will find something of interest throughout the year, come rain or shine.

A lovely mix of formal and woodland gardens. Perhaps best seen in Spring but still a lovely spot in winter.

Thanks for taking to time to write a review, particularly as the beginning of winter isn't the greatest time in the garden! This is the time when we begin the big clear-up, plan changes and planting and get on with all the invisible work which we hope will make the garden a better place next year. Visitors maybe don't always... More

Loved the varied amount of plants and flowers to see within beautiful garden setting. Even visiting in November there was still a number of flowers in bloom and lovely sea views to enjoy.

Many thanks for your kind review. It's been an amazing season too - so many plants flowering beyond their normal season, even now towards the end of November. We always have a smattering of rhododendrons flowering again in the autumn, but this year we have flowers on several different species. We've also had a number of plants setting seed which... More

The gardens were in full autumn colours and were a treat to walk round. We intend to return in the Spring to see them in bloom. A must visit for anyone who hasn't been

Arduaine is a very peaceful place - unless it's blowing a gale, of course, and even then it's more peaceful than the outside world! Do come back in the spring - but remember that we're an early garden and to see the rhododendrons and azaleas at their best you shouldn't leave it too late; April and May are generally good.... More

Arduaine can almost be another garden at different times of the year. Springtime is our strong point, of course, but even then it's worth remembering that we're an early garden and the April and May period is our spring peak. Summertime is good here too, as unlike some west coast gardens we have a lot to offer from July onwards... More

Even though the weather was not pleasant, our visit to the gardens was memorable. It is a voyage of discovery through the many different tree essences and varied shrubs. A well kept garden with many surprises such as wonderful views on Loch Melfort. Do not miss that gem!

Thank you for your review and kind comments. Glad that you enjoyed your visit - we try to make the garden as interesting as we can. It certainly helps to have such a wonderful location, though gardening at the seaside does bring its problems, of course! Something to see every day - especially if you leave the main paths and... We visited Arduaine in August, just as the tail end of Hurricane Bertha was passing through Argyll. Unfortunately the day we visited was quite overcast and chilly, and we didn't get there until later in the afternoon, so we didn't manage to see it at its best, but it was still spectacular. The plants and gardens are beautifully laid out... More

Sorry that you visited on a less than good day, but that's life I'm afraid! We've had a real mixture of weather recently including some of the most beautiful days, with blue skies, warm sunshine and no wind. The autumn colour is better this year than most as a result of the sunny day/chilly night combination. Had you visited in... More

Beautiful and very interesting collection of wide range of unusual plants from all over the world flourishing on the west coast. Amazing views too from this hidden gem. The next door Loch Melford hotel has lovely 'tea and scones' to revive you after your walk.

Thank you so much for your review! Arduaine has always grown unusual plants and we try to continue the tradition! So many of these go unnoticed that I'm keen to write a 'Rare and Unusual Plant Trail' for next season, for those who enjoy something out of the ordinary. Just one example is the group of ferns called Thyrsopteris elegans... More

Really nice gardens so well kept, lots of amazing plants, so much colour even in late September. Certainly a place to visit.

Maurice W, Head Gardener/Property Manager at Arduaine Garden, responded to this review

We've had a wonderful September, with many warm sunny days to keep things flowering. It's our aim to have a lot of late colour in the borders as the spring is so flamboyant with the flowering shrubs that we don't need early perennials quite so much. The weather has encouraged quite a lot of repeat flowering which is an added... More

These gardens are an easy walk, full of rhododendrons and magnolias. Even though our visit was out of season there was plenty to see, the viewpoints were particularly good. The small NTS hut boasts a "wee shop" and the staff member who ticketed us was full of useful information. The entrance to the gardens are by a hotel which has... More

So glad that you had a good time and thanks for your comments. It's always good to hear that our staff have been helpful too. Our reception building will close on Tuesday for the winter, reopening in April, but tickets and guidebooks can be obtained at the aforementioned hotel. The garden stays open all year, of course, and weather permitting... More

Beautiful garden. Quiet and relaxing. Easy walk, ok for kids. Great view point on the surrounding isles. Not a free attraction, but worth a visit when you fancy doing something relaxing. Path to the local rocky beach. Nice photographic opportunities.

Always good to hear that visitors enjoy themselves! Sorry we can't be free, but as a charity the National Trust for Scotland relies totally on the public when it comes to managing properties like this. One of the reasons for visiting gardens is to be able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity, and Arduaine has those in spades! We also... More
