Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift and enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over the world. Twenty acres of outstanding woodland plants include not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites such as camellia, pieris, azalea and magnolia. Other trees and shrubs take the flowering season on into the autumn along with an inspiring miscellany of bulbs, perennials, climbers, water plants and ferns, many rare and unusual, many down to earth and familiar, all interesting and beautiful in their diverse ways. A spectacular coastal and island panorama can be enjoyed from the easily accessible cliff top viewpoint. Visitors are welcome every day and will find something of interest throughout the year, come rain or shine.

This Scottish National Trust garden would have been really good earlier in the season with rhododendrons and azaleas out, but it was a pleasant hillside spot

Arduaine is in a breath-taking location - a great area for a holiday, or for just a quick visit in passing. We think we are a 'great garden' and many of our visitors agree. Arduaine is an old Campbell family garden which we try to manage in the same style. The family had always grown a range of exotic plants... More

Changes so much during the seasons but always worth a visit. Extraordinary variety of exotic plants spread over a large hillside down to the shore. Lots of quiet benches if you want to stop and think. A must see if you're in the area and have a spare hour (or more).

Glad you enjoy your visits to Arduaine, this garden of tranquillity on a wild shore! We have a huge variety of plants here, many being familiar but many which are rarely seen, so it's always worth a good hunt around to see what you can find - don't hesitate to ask questions either! The quiet benches you refer to often... More

Fabulous! The gardens were atmospheric and colourful, beautifully situated on Loch Melfort. A great National Trust for Scotland property.

Thank you so much for your review! Please pass on the news - we think we're a great garden but for some reason many visitors come upon us by chance. We have a wonderful situation right on the coast, so as well as some amazing plants we have great views over the ocean and islands. Our friendly staff are always... More

We visited in mid June when there was still a fabulous display of Rhododendrons. The site nestles by the coast and is laid out very attractively so that round every little corner there is something to say "wow" about. There are beautiful ponds and fantastic displays of blue poppies(Meconopsis) The view out to sea is also lovely and we will... More

You were very lucky to see such a display of rhododendrons in mid-June! This must be a unique happening; due to such a cold May our display just went on and on and on! In a 'normal' year I would be surprised if you'd been able to say the same thing about mid-May! If there is such a thing as... More

We certainly think it's an amazing place, which is probably why we've all been here for a long time! Glad to hear that you've enjoyed it too! We have a very special and extensive plant collection and are always keen to share it with visitors, so we're pleased when people ask plant questions. Many thanks for your review - Maurice. More

Wandered around looking at rhododendrons and plants Garden has its own microclimate so planting is specific to here. Marvellous views out to the islands.

Thanks for your review! Arduaine does have a special microclimate, but within every garden are special places where tender plants can be grown - it's always worth experimenting with thermometers during winter to find the warmer places, which was what we did here many moons ago. The garden is right on the coast which certainly allows for lovely views, but... More

As the title suggests, it was raining when we visited but found the layout and content of the garden made the sun shine through it all. Well worth a visit.

Sorry it was wet when you came to Arduaine - this must be the greyest summer so far, so it can only get better! I'm glad that the sun shone for you, even if only metaphorically! Many thanks for taking the time to write a review, Maurice. More

Didn't expect to find what we did...a wonderful, mature, woodland garden set adjacent to The Loch Melfort Hotel (which also makes for a first class stop, whether you stay over or eat in the bistro) near a sea inlet. The gardens are very thoughtfully planted out and there is so much variety that there really is something for everyone. We... More

Our location on the west coast allows us to grow a very wide range of plants, so as you say, there really is something for everyone. I'm in the process of creating some additional laminated info sheets to highlight various groups of plants and one of them will be 'rarities', as many of these go unnoticed and I'd like to... More

This garden, open to the public, is well worth a visit. It is a mature woodland garden with interesting trees and shrubs, with some flower beds in small open spaces and quite a large well tended pond. in some parts the planting resembles quite dense Temperate Rain Forest. i\t is well placed beside an hotel with restaurant, so it is... Maurice W, Property Manager/Head Gardener at Arduaine Garden, responded to this review

We like the idea of Arduaine as a Temperate Rain Forest - we've certainly had enough rain this year to qualify for it! The pond you mention is the Heron Pond, our largest, though we do have 12 other of varying sizes. Unlike many woodland gardens we do have a very extensive collection of herbaceous perennials, so the display lasts... More
