Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift and enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over the world. Twenty acres of outstanding woodland plants include not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites such as camellia, pieris, azalea and magnolia. Other trees and shrubs take the flowering season on into the autumn along with an inspiring miscellany of bulbs, perennials, climbers, water plants and ferns, many rare and unusual, many down to earth and familiar, all interesting and beautiful in their diverse ways. A spectacular coastal and island panorama can be enjoyed from the easily accessible cliff top viewpoint. Visitors are welcome every day and will find something of interest throughout the year, come rain or shine.

This was by no means my first visit, as I live not too far away, but I have never been disappointed. Best in Early Spring (earlier than you might think) because of its lovely Rhododendrons and Azaeleas, it is an attractive garden at any time of year. People with limited mobility might be well advised to stay in the part... More

Wouldn't it be good if spring fever lasted throughout the year! On second thoughts, maybe it would make it less of a surprise! As you say, our spring display is usually quite early, and late April and early May are usually prime time for rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas, though we have a wonderful perennial, fern and shrub display for the... Visited these gardens as we were staying at the Loch Melfort hotel next door (which I would recommend for the views alone). It would be easy to drive past these gardens without finding out what a gem they really are. They are a credit to the head gardener who oversees such a display. So much is crammed into the twenty... Thanks for such a positive review - so glad that you enjoyed the garden. Thanks too for joining the National Trust for Scotland - this garden wouldn't be here if it wasn't for our members! I have only two garden staff and they're a dedicated pair of guys both of whom, like me, have been here a long time. They... More

What a wonderful and highly accessible garden for all, including four pawed pals. The viewpoints give breathtaking vistas and the planting is sublime. Well done NTS.

Ooooh! Don't tell Inverewe! Good of you to give us a positive review - we're a very small team who work hard to show the garden off as best we can, so we're always pleased to hear that visitors have enjoyed it! I sometimes think that Arduaine is like Inverewe was in the beginning, before that garden became so popular... More

Even on a day that was characteristically dreich and drizzly this garden is pleasant with views across the sea loch and many woodland walks. There is colour most of the year, I imagine. Plenty benches to allow the visitor to sit and and and enjoy the plants, trees, views and birds. It is free to members of the national trusts... More

We're very glad that the NTS did take the garden on or it would be a very different place today. We're always sailing pretty close to the wind but manage to keep going thanks to the generosity of the public - let's hope that this will always be the case! One of the favourite words used about Arduaine is tranquillity... More

Paths climb up to give wonderful views out over the gardens and bay. The rhododendrons are amazing - visit in spring if possible.

Thanks for visiting Arduaine. It's hard not to be amazing in the spring with so much in flower, rhododendrons in particular, but we do try to provide a wealth of interesting plants right through until the autumn - the colour is maybe a little more subtle. There's always something to be seen - and on top of it all there's... More

Taken on by The National Trust for Scotland without endowment. Midway between Oban and Lochgilphead. Partial wheelchair access. Seeds for sale.

Thank you for reviewing Arduaine. Back in 1991, when the garden was offered to the NTS, it was decided to accept the gift without endowment because of the importance of the garden and its plant collection. It could be said that this was going against policy, but an appeal was launched shortly afterwards to create an endowment fund - a... More

We greatly enjoyed our visit on a gloriously sunny day, and our kids loved looking into the ponds, doing the kids trail, and generally having fun. Unfortunately it was very much marred by of the gardeners scolding my 8 year old son - after we had just left - for sitting on a patch of grass. He very rudely said... More

Thanks for your review and I'm glad that you enjoyed our beautiful garden, but very sorry that you felt that I'd been rude to your son. Please allow me to point out that he wasn't just 'sitting on a patch of grass' - in fact we're delighted for everyone to use our lawns for relaxation - but had scrambled up... More

Thank you for your kind review! We do our best! There's a huge number of plants in flower now so if other people are looking in to TripAdvisor, now's the time to come to Arduaine! Not that any time isn't a good time, of course! Thanks again, Maurice. More

This is an amazing garden, with a great peaceful ambiance. The plants are wonderful and I think EVERYONE is named - if that is your passion. The paths are marked and seem well graded and there are lots of seats dotted around. It is truly great to have wee note boxes beside the seats which tell you what to look... More

How kind to give us such a good review. I wish I could agree that all the plants are labelled but I would be exaggerating - we are trying to get all the trees and shrubs done, but it's a long and expensive business as you can imagine. Unfortunately not everyone is as appreciative - I noticed several more labels... More

We drove down to Arduaine from Oban, it seems a long way but is well worth it. The kids loved playing in the children's play area while we had a great coffee from the hotel. After that we went into the gardens themselves, which are superb. None of us are gardeners but we could appreciate the work involved and admire... More

Many thanks for your kind review! It may seem a long road from Oban but it's only 20 miles and usually takes about 30 minutes unless you get stuck behind a caravan! It's a scenic route though, with good views out over the sea to Mull and various sea-lochs and islands. It's a wonderful time to visit the garden with... More
