My wife and I had recently rejoined HHA (£75.00 27 properties last year) and decided on a lovely sunny Sunday to visit Lydiard House (arrogant council staff...Jobs Worth !) and Bowood House. Having arrived at Bowood House we explained to the most courteous lady on reception that my Dear wife had forgotten her HHA membership card but the good lady... More

Bowood is a little bit odd and I found out why when, after touring the "house", you find that the "real" house had been neglected to the point where it had to be razed and the family instead turned the orangerie (not too shabby!) into living quarters, instead. The building is worth a quick tour, just to peek... but then... More

Hello bravo-cinzia Many thanks for your kind review - I'm really pleased you enjoyed the House and Grounds. The landscape you mention was designed by 'Capability' Brown over 250 years ago and is one of the best examples of his famous work in the UK. Next year sees the Tercentenary of his birth and we are planning various ways to... More

As members of the HHA, we had free admittance to the property, which meant we were able to bypass the queue to purchase tickets.as you enter the grounds, there is a small petting farm, with sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. It's small and a nice add on, but wouldn't take more than 10 minutes to view. There are also two... More

Hello mabelEngland Many thanks for your review. I will pass on your comments about the restaurant to the catering team and make sure they are addressed. I'm concerned that you felt that some areas were 'off limits' as we have literally hundreds of acres of beautiful grounds and 'Capability' Brown landscape to explore as well as the large adventure playground... Unfortunately I went on a summers day where the weather changed quite dramatically. If you are a family with children you can at least use the kids part to play however when I was there the weather started to get very windy and wet so all I really did was see the house which is nice but I have been... Hello Tigger1013 Thank you for your review - I'm sorry that the weather seems to have spoiled your visit. Most people find that there is a lot to see in the house - it is not completely open to the public as it is still the family home of Lord and Lady Lansdowne (which is part of the charm of... More

Marvellous grounds, delightful formal garden and interesting but not overwhelming house. The real surprise was the Stable Restaurant, where were had a carvery Sunday lunch. The roast beef was some of the best we have ever tasted.

Being members of the NT we are used to gardens and houses and probably expect more. Bowood House is over priced for what you get. The house is basically a few downstairs empty rooms - The Orangerie with a few not so good paintings on the walls, lets put it this way if they were good they certainly would not... More

Hello Mandy S Thanks for taking the time to write a review - I'm sorry you didn't come away from Bowood having had a wonderful experience but Bowood is a very different offering to a National Trust property. For a start it is privately owned and is still a family home (as it has been for 250 years) which is... More

The entry fees are extortionately expensive for what you see. Definitely not value for money. Unpleasant staff who would crack their face if they smile on you. Would avoid at all cost as for the price you get better day out somewhere else.

Hello VierkaHiscock I'm sorry you don't seem to have enjoyed your visit to Bowood. I'm surprised at your comments as our prices are checked against other local attractions and most feedback we get is that they are very good value for money as there is so much to see and enjoy here! We have hundreds of acres of beautiful grounds... More

Bowed House has been the family home to the Lansdowne's since1754 the property is well maintaned and contains numerous historical treasures. The grounds to the parkland were the creation of Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Hello David M Many thanks for your lovely review - I'm pleased you enjoyed your visit. It sounds like you visited on the same day as Lady Lansdowne's Dog Show which is very popular but does not include access to the House, terraces and adventure playground so hopefully did not impact on your visit at all. You mentioned the 'Capability'... More

This is fabulous place we came to see the gardens not particularly interested in the house and we were told at the entrance that the one ticket covered all. The grounds were fabulous but disappointingly were weren't allowed access to the walled garden which really ruined the trip for us. The house was more interesting than I had anticipated especially... Our fourth time at Bowood and excellent as ever. Visited with friends on a warm sunny day to this lovely estate. Lots to see but not so much that you feel worn out after you visit. Hello Travlintone Many thanks for your review - I'm really pleased you enjoyed your day with us.
