Well organized trip and a experience of a life time riding behind a pack truck which was not as frightening as anticipate. Was there at sun set as well as when the whole stupa is lighted up - its amazing

Unlike any significant religious site I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot). It is where religion meets theater meets chaos. Those who don't enjoy it, don't get it. Was recently there during a Myanmar holiday (the ending of exams for the children), which amped it up a bit. First the truck ride up the mountain, pay the... More

Well worth a visit away from the main city attractions. Travel on the open trucks is a particularly interesting experience.

It is really crowded there, the truck ride to the top is bumpy and uncomfortable ( no leg room). We went with the last truck which was 18:00 and could not get back down later, as many locals go and stay overnight. So we had to walk but after an hour one vehicle drove past and picked us up. It... Worth the crazy drive in the Open trucks up the mountain and seeing the thousands of locals visiting with their large extended families all praying and enjoying being together!

I think, after a terrible snd awfully long journey from Ngapali Beach straight here, I'm perhaps not at my most positive. This was the most cattle-like I've felt in Myanmar so far. It was crazy taking the roller coaster esque truck to the top, spectacularly lofty views. The rock is... Golden and perched atop another. I took the obligatory sunset... More

We hadn't originally planned to stay at Mt Kyaikto/Golden Rock & added it back to our itinerary fairly late into our travel plans. After the 45 minute roller coaster ride on the trucks up the mountain, we arrived at our hotel Mountain Top dropped off our bags & headed straight to the rock. By the way we found the truck... More

Went on a holiday weekend when the locals go. It was pure anarchy. Loads of people jostling onto trucks, hundreds spread all over the area cooking, eating, laughing, fighting, bedding down for the night. Noise and smells going on till the wee hours of the night. It was hard to even walk around, let alone take a picture without being... More

I am not Buddhist, and therefore my visit was as a tourist, not as a pilgrim. If the pagoda was near some other interesting landmark or town, it might be different, but it takes a large effort to get here, and for what? First of all, the rock itself, as well as the entire complex, is just not that special.... More

I asked the question you might be asking as well. Is it really worth the detour that you have to make from Yangon and spend time to visit this place? After all, it's just one big golden rock and that's all there is to it. Common sense said skip it, but I held on to what Lonely Planet said on... More
