As NT members we thought we would pop in for an hour & tick Finch Foundry off on our way to the lovely Castle Drogo. Two & a half hours & lots of photos later we left! The site is lovely, quiet walk along the leat, pretty gardens with tiny tea room, peaceful Quaker burial ground & the foundry itself.... More

We too started our visit by walking beside the river - a lovely peaceful walk which took about 45 minutes. We arrived at the forge in time for the talk and demonstration of the old forge workings - including the water wheel operating various machinery. Great for children of all ages! Very informative and interesting. Set in lovely gardens adjoining... More

This is a lovely little place, and what makes it so lovely is the volunteers. It is a fascinating insight into our industrial history and tells the story of a local Richard Branson, Mr Finch. You can't really understand it on it's own, as there's a lot to take in and no signage really, so you really do need to... More

Loved the history told and demonstrated by the knowledgeable staff. To see the 1650 forge working and imagining how they produced 400 tools per day was stunning, and on a dry day, the walks out the back behind the graveyard is a must!

We stopped off early one morning before opening, but as we could still get into the grounds and park we did. We explored the pretty Quaker graveyard and then headed off down to the river for a walk. Allow 50min for the walk: Go down to the river, cross the bridge and turn right. Just follow the river through a... More

Looking at the forging equipment you expect it to fall apart at any moment. It’s a hotchpotch of parts cleverly brought together to automate some of the blacksmith’s art. The guide was very knowledgeable leading us through the history of the site and how the Finch family turned it into a thriving industrial complex.

The Finch Foundry is a wonderful place to visit whatever the weather. The demonstrations are fascinating whatever your age and the staff are helpful and friendly. There is a gorgeous little tea room which serves snacks and delicious cream teas - more substantially there is a welcoming local pub across the road which serves great pub grub at fab prices.

We stopped here on the way home from Cornwall- much better than a service station Only 3 or so miles off the A30. Kids aged 13&15 enjoyed trying on Victorian outfits & also liked seeing the water wheels and forge area. Often they're bored by National Trust properties but this one went down well Didn't use tea rooms or walks... More

A tour around the foundry with someone who knows the history and workings. Very interesting. Can't remember if we paid to go in so have said yes just in case!

Fascinating place. You real get a feel for the working of a small foundry in years past. Excellent talk and not only a place for the men to visit. Great for children but keep an eye on them. Tea in the garden on a lovely day is very pleasant. Easy parking. Check events online. Interesting programme.
