The historical city center has been an interesting place to visit long time ago. Great part of the houses has been let to rot and some have already fallen. It is a pity because it would be a very nice place to visit. You can still visit the place and imagine it in the ancient times. But be careful because... More

The historic center of Sao Luis is formed by a set of almost 5000 dwellings and 900 of them within the area considered heritage of humanity. Despite being beautiful, the center lost urban life in many streets and blocks. Its fantastic to know and studie this unique place in the world.

The historic center of Sao Luis is not big at all - you can easily walk through it in one morning or afternoon. There are plenty of 18th and 19th century houses to admire, with beautiful facades, and some churches. Unfortunately, everything is in a very poor state. There is restoration work in progress but it is not hard to... More

Visited the colonial center of Sao Luis for a few hours. Walked the cobbled streets and visited some of the shops. Not in a restored shape, but still well worth the time and effort to get there. A most unique destination.

Great artisanato shops, interesting architecture, cobbled streets, and a market with shops that will leave you wondering how they got the crabs into the glass flasks and what's in those purple colored bottles? Turns out both are related to variations on Cachaça.

Sāo Luis is an old colonial city and although the heart of the old town is in very poor shape it is well worth at least a day to check it out.

If you like colonial streets in an advanced state of decay and abandonment then this is the place for you. Great for photos! But quite surprising how many of the buildings are just abandoned shells. Huge potential for development of this city, it could be another Cartagena
