Owner description:
This monastery was first built in 495 over an ancient sun worshiping site. Although it's been destroyed many times by a wide variety of people, it keeps being restored and rebuilt. A lower level room may even be an original sun worshiping chamber, or not. The view from this monastery is vast and unimpeded, and it may even be that on a clear day you can see Syria. The present inhabitants are Syriac Orthodox Christians and the literature says it's used as an orphanage, although there were no orphans evident. It has been heavily restored, probably many many times over it's long history. Views are spectacular and there is a pleasant cafe.
