The outside looks amazing, but when you go inside it's absolutely spectacular. We've even experienced the monks meditative singing, which they do every day at 6pm and it really is like a jump about 200 years back.

Beautiful old monastery with a great legend surrounding its founding in the 1300s. This is one of the most stunning sights you will see in Bavaria. I recommend coming to it from the Oberammergau side. It is an immense, dominating sight as you approach it and the inside does not disappoint. And the bier! They have a monastery brewery that... This monastery is not part of the local diocese so it supports itself by making their own beer, their own liquore, their own cheese; apparently they work very closely with the small ton where this monastery is located and employ about eighty percent of the towns people. I saw the church and the grounds around which included a high school... More

One cannot drive between Garmisch-P and Oberammergau without stopping at Ettal. The monastary is impressive and the historical markers depict the tragedy of the 30 Years War at Ettal. Take the time to visit the basilica and the updated gift shop. Restaurants and lodging are located across the street and adjacent to the property.

My wife and I stopped here earlier today...what we saw was truly beautiful. The baroque basilica explodes with color when we passed through the door..check the pictures I've included with the review. If you're driving through the Ammergau, take the time to stop and admire this wonderful example of 16th century architecture!

Gorgeous grounds with so much history. Worth the stop for sure. The gift shop sells bottled beer to take with (to be clear not refrigerated) and the monks make their own, cheese, beer, etc is what we were told. We choose not to eat there because of our timeline but would have liked to. Bring a tour guide to tell... More

This amazingly gorgeous abbey has much to offer for those who plan ahead! If you "drop in", you can still take advantage of the stunning architecture and art for viewing, and still appreciate the amazing history of the place. Do your "homework" and read up on the history (wiki is perfect) of this place. If you intend on taking a... More

A very, very old monatery. Enormous grounds and a place of rest either on your way up to Schloss Linderhof or on the way back. We are reminded that the Nazis did damage there as well. That was no sacred ground to them.

This wonderful church is an eight sided church with a wonderful choir and ceiling. The church is approached from a central coutyard and approached by a flight of steps. It is very impressive. There is a wonderful monastery shop where my husband felt compelled to buy some beer!
