Most of what was at least kind of old burned down and they are getting close to having it rebuilt to look old, like most every "old town" in China. If you haven't been to one it will be cool otherwise best to spend your time on sites outside of town or move on to TLG or western Sichuan.

The church overlooks the town, up quite a number of stairs. It was beautiful just to sit a watch people turning the prayer wheel. We were warned off visiting Shangri La because there is 'not much left to see'. Quite the opposite. It's a fascinating city and this town church site is very charming.

Almost 70% of the old city has burned in last January. But so much remains to be seen, both inside the city and in the neighbourhood, that it is still a must stop in this part of the yunnan.

After climbing to the top of the hill the temple is nice and its a must to take a turn on the giant prayer wheel.
