The chateau is largely original, though part of it was destroyed in the 19th century, and the decorated walls and ceilings are fantastic. It was built in the early 17th century, with walls and ceilings painted with lapis lazuli and gold. There is also some original furnishings and period artworks. The garden is a complete restoration, with interesting topiaries. We... More

The Chateau de Cormatin was bought by 3 art students in the 1980s who have been since restoring it back to its original splendor. They've removed old varnish to reveal amazing paintings on walls and ceilings, rebuilt the moat, replanted the gardens -- there's a lovely formal garden and a cottage garden, plus generally beautiful grounds. It was pouring the... More

During my visit in Taize community I visited chateu de Cormatin with recommendations of friends. Not so expensive entrance, really interesting place and lot of exhibits can be touch, tried etc... If you are traveling nearby - Chateau de Cormatin must be in your TO DO list.

this is the second time I have visited this chateau. Make an effort to get there, spend time in the garden especially the kitchen garden. The tour is excellent. The whole chateau is a photographers pleasure. At the ticket office get the receipt and ask them to attach it to the chateau pamphlets of the area you will then if... More

Great looking Chateau. Strange there was no discount for disabled visitors, also the tea room was closed for the season even though it seemed to indicae they would be open. we paid the 6€ entry without the guide and thought we would be able to see the Chateau the same as everyone - but there were areas that the guided... The Chateau de Cormatin has classical design, beautiful architecture, interesting interior design and decoration and beautiful gardens. This is not quite as fancy or well done as some of the Chateau on the Loire, but is well worth a visit in southern Burgundy. The drive from Tournus was simply beautiful also....great rolling countryside, beautiful farms, ancient buildings, great churches, stone... More

Rooms painted, decorated and left for presentation as they were. Excellent snapshot as to how it would have been in the time. Only problem was the "missing" translated pages from the English guide folder. No doubt the same for other languages. Whole rooms missing. Staff really need to update these so that non French speakers can get the same out... More

Chateau de Cormatin offered more than I expected. Although the guided tour of the interior is done only in French there are typed scripts available in a number of languages so that you can follow along with what the guide is saying. Our guide did speak English and was able to answer questions. The tour gives a very interesting view... More

This is a lovely Chateau and worth a visit - especially the 19th century room - with some pretty cool pictures. But the 16th century rooms are really special. Particularly the Marquise's rooms - and the inner rooms - at the end of the tour. Maize was fun and gardens lovely. *Access is by guided tour only - I think... More

We are probably a bit spoilt for seeing Chateaux and when we compare Chateau Cormatin with others, unfortunately it is way down the list. Sad really because it has potential but has been left in a poor state. To those that run Cormatin perhaps you should use Château de Chenonceau as your benchmark? The entry fee is euro 10 each...
