The weather was cold, but that is force majeur, we had much better weather on other days. Still, the story behind the Hill of Crosses is quite the tale. It has an exciting history to it. When visiting, bring a large cross or crucifix to place down and contribute to the expansion of the hill. Truly a remarkable sight! Even... More

Hill of crosses is in the city of Siauliai. It needs to take great effort to go there as the transportation is not convenient. I take 4 hours bus to go to Siauliai from Villius. Then, take another bus to a place called Domanti. After that I have to walk 2km highway (no pavement) to there. When you get there,... More

This is an amazing sight to see but you really need a car to get here. The atmosphere as you walk around the crosses it quite amazing and it is well worth the visit. People have been placing crosses here since the 19th century mainly in remembrance of freedom fighters.

Lithuanians have been putting there crosses as early as in the 19th century in opposition to the tsarist regime and later to protest against the Soviet power, but the tradition hasn't died even nowadays, when the hill of crosses is as a symbol of Lithuanian independence and rebellious spirit. The amount of different sized crosses and rosaries, placed on the... More

Siauliai is 200km from Vilnius. We booked a private guide from home and we drove to Siauliai passing by the site of the Virgin's apparition at the Cathedral of our Lady of Siluva, and the abandoned Tytuvenu Monastery in Tytuvenai, both wonderful sites to visit on their own. But there are no words to describe the Hill of Crosses. A... More

Stopped by on the way from Kleipeda to Riga. People placing crosses praying and as a symbol of praising the God but during the Soviets ruling times, they were banned from doing so and the crosses were once being removed. The Lithuanians tried to boycott and starting building another one, soon it became a symbol of believe in independency also.... More

One of the most wonderful places in the whole country. Impressive is the best word to describe it. It doesn't matter if you believe or not in God, you just cannot help loving this place and appreciating how religion became a perfect way to unify and free the country. Don't miss it!

I would recommend the Hill of Crosses to anyone visiting the region. We were staying in Riga and took a day trip with a personalised guide and driver, which was relatively affordable. We had only a short time and no public transport stops at the site. The display of tens of thousands of crosses, many in the famous wood-carving style... More

It is a place worth to visit, but just because I had never seen something like this before. I think it has meaning for some people, but now it is mostly another turist spot.
