We took a bus from Covadonga after visiting the Basilica. The views are breathtaking, maybe the best of Picos de Europa. We were lucky we went in a clear, sunny day and walked the whole trail, amazing!! cows wearing bells around their necks, the lakes, the mountains!! A MUST!!

In early July, the landscape is dotted with cows wearing bells around their necks. This really is the epitome of 'green Spain' with beautiful expanses of grass and patches of snow on the distant mountains. Today, there is a very nice café above the lake, but it would have been fascinating to see the area when it was the preserve... More

We took the bus from Cangas de Onis bus station up to the lakes. This could not have been easier: there is good parking at the bus station and the buses departed every 15 mins. The return journey was similarly trouble free. Up at the lakes we took the 5 kilometer way marked walk round both the lakes. The views... More

After visiting Covadonga, drive upwards The same road until you find 2 lakes on top of the mountain, you will want to take long walks so be prepared, you will find asturian cows, sheep, beautiful views and a sense of freedom. Dont miss them. PD You cannot swim in the lakes.

A truly unique experience, not just because of the lakes (which are obviously the focal point), but the whole experience of being at such an altitude, which I had never experienced, and the sheer beauty of the scenery wherever you looked. Whatever your preferred mode of taking pictures make sure it has plenty of space/battery!! We took a picnic and... More

Two beautiful lakes, with a view of the high mountains. Wide grass fields with free cattle. Recommended when you are in Cangas de Onis.

Absolutely stunning scenery! Tricky Road up from the basilica but worth it on a sunny day . There are taxis which will take you up if you don't fancy the road or indeed the hike which is around 12km.

My husband drove us up to Lake Ercina. The drive is spectacular in itself. It was a cloudy day but we drove up though the clouds and out the other side in stunning blue sky and magnificent views. We managed to park at the top no proble, but only because we got there early. When we left people were queuing... More

Last visited here 14 years ago and wondered if my impression of the place had become exaggerated. Far from it. I think it is even more beautiful second time round. Loads of walking - flattish around the lake but more hilly away from it. Except at weekends (and probably in the height of the summer holidays) there is plenty of... More
