Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors. The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches. The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

Our entire family was excited to walk among the gardens and enjoy a leisurely lunch at Chaumont. It, unfortunately, failed to live up to our expectations. We arrived later than planned and missed the opportunity for the restaurant lunch and the cafes were basically out of food. For such a major attraction we found it difficult to believe. Our walk... Chaumont offers a number of things many other Loire chateaux do not: - it is truly on the Loire - overlooking the river from the grassy rise 40 metres above it - it makes wonderful use of its spacious gardens for a standing art exhibition - it has, aside from the castle itself, a stable complex with its own architectural... What a fantastic day we had at Chaumont-sur-Loire. We read about the chateau beforehand using their web site and TA. So we drove to the South entrance rather than use the entrance in the village. The chateau itself was a well worth visit, we hired the audio visual guide to help us with the tour. But you get a good... More

Visiting this chateau we found there was also a garden and art exhibition taking place which goes on until November. Combined ticket for chateau and gardens is 17 euros. The grounds are immaculate and stable area spotless. The chateau is undergoing some refurbishment in certain parts. Large art pieces are displayed around. There are 25 small gardens to view, gardeners... More

only visit this one, if you have run out of Chateaux to explore (which would be difficult with 71 in the Loire Valley. And if you must visit (which I strongly advise against) then make sure you enter by the SOUTH entrance, which I believe is on a level with the Chateau. Where you see the entrance signs in the... Wonderful gardens and grounds, very well taken care of - blooming all over. Wonderful location on the river. Well worth a visit. Best view ? Take a picnic on the other side of the Loire River and enjoy the castle up on a hill looking over the river valley. Lovely..

Is what Diane de Poitiers was allegedly quoted as saying when she first saw the chateau at the age of 17. As the mistress of Henry II, de Poitiers was forced to surrender the chateau by Catherine de Medici after Henry's death so she only occupied it for a brief time. The chateau and gardens are not that remarkable (Chateau... More

This chateau doesn’t seem to make the “A List” in most guides like Chambord and Chenonceaux do. I can’t imagine why. And since it doesn’t seem to be on the “must see” list, it’s not crowded at all. There is so much to see and do. There is the chateau which is in excellent repair and fully furnished in the... More

I'd imagine this would be a very busy and hot experience at the height of the holiday season, but in June is was quiet enough and there are plenty of benches placed in the shade. We did not go to the Chateau, just the gardens. There were a few ordinary ones, but there were enough really good ones to make... More

Maybe I had seen too many chateaus by the time we got here, but it just didn't seem as special. The gardens were very interesting though. It appears they have one section (quite a few acres) where they have permanent exhibits and then a special area where they have a Festival of Gardens. It was a little confusing, but didn't... More
