Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors.

The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches.

The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

This place is big. You need some time here to soak it in. The grounds, the Chateau, all are in exquisite condition and beautiful to behold. Then theres the art exhibits. Massive pieces taking up an entire room. There are different events held here during the summer so check out what's happening ahead of time. There is also fine dining... More

While the number of visitors to nearby Chenonceau and Chambord is far greater, Chaumont-sur-Loire is a gem of a place. It was my favorite by far, and definitely one to see -- especially if you also visit Chenonceau. The same two women -- Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici -- also lived here, although both seemed to like Chenonceau... More

Serene, quaint surroundings. I don't know which I preferred more, but the view over the river is pretty great, the castle is beautiful, but stands in the shadow of some of the greater castles in Loire.

This was my favorite of all the chateaux. You park below in the town, and walk perhaps a quarter mile or a little more up the hill to the chateau. The grounds are beautiful....dark green lawns, flowers and a variety of huge pine trees. Also on the grounds are buildings that probably used to be stables and work buildings enclosing... More

We visited this chateau when a garden exhibition took place there and we really liked it! The gardens are huge and really impressive with the chateau set in all the colours.

The majestic Chateau looks like the ones we saw in storybooks as children, only this is the real item. Tall turreted corners and entry with draw bridge - the authenticity is amazing. Wonderfully decorated & furnished interior, stables, equipage and beautiful gardens and green scape for walking & exploring. All this & views to the Loire flowing slowly down below.... More

This Loire valley chateau is not as impressive as Chenonceaux, but it has impressive gardens and the two sites have a share history, so it makes a good companion for a visit to the former.

Beautiful chateaux on the banks of the Loire. Great on the inside as well spent a good couple of hours wandering around. Small cafe onsite for food and drink.

We only visited the gardens and the outside of the Chateau. It was great on a balmy, sunny summer day.

Beautiful inside and out. The stables are really neat if your a horse person and the garden show was beautiful. Take the bus from Blois and they give you a discount ticket for only 12 euro for the chateau, stables and garden show.
