Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors.

The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches.

The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

Well worth a visit. As well as an historic chateau there is a great exhibition of modern art in the gardens and inside the chateau and during the summer there is a garden festival. Not quite Chelsea but well worth a visit.

We caught the train from Tours to Onzain with our bikes and rode the 2.6 kms to the Chateau but this could easily be walked. The east entrance through which we entered then leads to a pathway that gently walked us up the 40 metres (about 700 mts in actual lenght) – at the top we were greeted by a... More

The chateau is in a truly stunning setting. The rooms that are furnished are superb. Many of the unfurnished rooms contain art work and installations which were not to our taste in the setting but worth seeing. The grounds and international gardens are lovely. Plenty of places to picnic, snack or fine dining.

This place has been on my 'must do' list for a while and now its done I want to go back again. We drove straight there from Caen 3 hours or so, then spent 6 hours there and could have spent longer. We didn't have time to do the chateau. The grounds were amazing. The chateau has its own gardens... More

I came here with high hope after researching on the official website, I was very much looking forward to visiting this chateau. Here I came for the garden for three hours and still found that there were some places left unseen. I was in awe of the sight. This is where arts and nature blend in perfectly. To many, the... More

This chateau is under rated. Before coming to the Loire we didn't read anything significant about it in the blogs. Just a few comments on how it's nice to stop here on the way to Ambroise. I would recommend a full day here. It's a huge place. There is the chateau, gardens, expositions and the festival du jardin until November... More

We enjoyed a lovely few hours at this very pretty riverside chateau. The rooms are all beautifully set out with furniture of the era. We particularly enjoyed climbing up into the attic rooms where an art exhibition was displayed; seeing rooms behind the scenes was more fascinating than the art work and gave a real insight into what the chateau... We drove up the hill and parked just outside the main entrance. The entrance fees to both the International Garden Festival and Chateau are pretty steep so we limited the visit to the gardens. At the entrance to each small garden is a brief summary of the main ideas, who the designer is and their nationality. Each garden is enclosed,... More
