Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors. The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches. The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

I'd imagine this would be a very busy and hot experience at the height of the holiday season, but in June is was quiet enough and there are plenty of benches placed in the shade. We did not go to the Chateau, just the gardens. There were a few ordinary ones, but there were enough really good ones to make... More

Maybe I had seen too many chateaus by the time we got here, but it just didn't seem as special. The gardens were very interesting though. It appears they have one section (quite a few acres) where they have permanent exhibits and then a special area where they have a Festival of Gardens. It was a little confusing, but didn't... More

We came here because we had driven by it and had already visited the other more popular chateaus before. In summer there is an international garden festival. You can easily spend a good 4 hours You should not miss the castle, stables and art installations. The castle is very interesting including the characters that stayed there, the location is beautiful,... More

Having visited many wonderful gardens in both the UK and France we visited the Garden Festival with great expectations. However, we were quite disappointed and left wondering if perhaps we should have visited the Chateau instead. Maybe I am missing the point, we did expect some "contemporary" gardens but I was left wondering if some of these people have been... More

Visited the park without the castle and maybe we should have gone to the castle too. The park is a mix of botanic garden (messy) and artwork (some good). Interesting but will not go back.

International garden design festival and castle surrounds are excellent. While some of the gardens in the exhibition are definitely quite ordinary, many are good to excellent. And offer some ideas for even domestic use, elsewhere. New area S of main grounds also very good and further developments obviously planned. Did not visit castle interior but did appreciate site and architecture... More

We decided to visit the chateau and not just the gardens and wished we had spent all of our time at the gardens. We also visited Chenonceau and Cheverny, and they were much interesting and well furnished. However, the gardens of this chateau are amazing and huge. Spend your time in the gardens.

Not cheap, but really worth every penny; the splendid gardenexpo, the nice english garden with art, and the castle. We spent more than 6 hours(!) here, and loved it. Do yourself a favour: start to the right, with the english historic garden (with art!) en afterwards the gardenexpo on the left side. Don't forget the part on the other side... More

I don't know why but this was one of my favorites! Not huge and chaotic, very warm and cosy, we enjoyed our visit !!! Our dog was allowed in the castle in our hug and that was a nice surprise also! I really felt like being in the medieval time in this chateau and I highly recommend it'
