Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors. The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches. The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

This place has been on my 'must do' list for a while and now its done I want to go back again. We drove straight there from Caen 3 hours or so, then spent 6 hours there and could have spent longer. We didn't have time to do the chateau. The grounds were amazing. The chateau has its own gardens... More

I came here with high hope after researching on the official website, I was very much looking forward to visiting this chateau. Here I came for the garden for three hours and still found that there were some places left unseen. I was in awe of the sight. This is where arts and nature blend in perfectly. To many, the... More

This chateau is under rated. Before coming to the Loire we didn't read anything significant about it in the blogs. Just a few comments on how it's nice to stop here on the way to Ambroise. I would recommend a full day here. It's a huge place. There is the chateau, gardens, expositions and the festival du jardin until November... More

We enjoyed a lovely few hours at this very pretty riverside chateau. The rooms are all beautifully set out with furniture of the era. We particularly enjoyed climbing up into the attic rooms where an art exhibition was displayed; seeing rooms behind the scenes was more fascinating than the art work and gave a real insight into what the chateau... We drove up the hill and parked just outside the main entrance. The entrance fees to both the International Garden Festival and Chateau are pretty steep so we limited the visit to the gardens. At the entrance to each small garden is a brief summary of the main ideas, who the designer is and their nationality. Each garden is enclosed,... More

We chose this château because of the International Garden Festival, but were pleasantly surprised by the castle itself. They've opened up part of the third floor which is mostly un-restored, which was fun to explore. The attic as well as the rest of the castle has interesting modern art installations throughout, including in the chapel, kitchen, and outlying buildings. The... More

It was a very long walk uphill to this Chateau. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. A few of the rooms in the chateau were very well decorated but most of them weren't, which was disappointing. It was a good outing any way.

1. Do the pasta buffet lunch! Worth the 18 Euro, very cool experience (though be prepared for weird flavours). 2. The garden festival is busy but interesting; wear your walking shoes for sure. Park at the back entrance near the soccer field. 3. Wish we'd had time/energy to see the park. The castle was sort of meh. 4. Lovely place... More

We went to visit the chateau, which despite living several years in the area, we had not yet visited. Having visited many chateaux in the region, I can only say that I am very glad we have now visited Chaumont! It is most definitely worth a trip, and not only that, you should think about spending the entire day here.... More
