My visit to Vaux-le-Vicomte was one of the highlights of my trip to France. Family-owned and operated, the Chateau and its staff are warm and welcoming to tourists. Don’t waste your time dealing with the hassle and crowds of Versailles. The Chateau's intimate and inviting feel enables you to explore the beautiful grounds as you lose yourself in a fantasy... more

I had already been to Versailles and was interested in a day trip outside of Paris and I had seen images of Vaux in a movie that I had recently seen so I was interested in visiting the chateau. My god, it's stunning! It is the image of perfection. I walked up to the entranceway and I thought that I... more

August 2008. If you're in the area and can get around easily, I would suggest that you skip Vaux le Vicomte and go to Fontainebleau. At 12.50 euros, the place is vastly overpriced and not that that well maintained. The gardens and architecture are fine but as an overall package Fontainebleau is far ahead - with their all day ticket... more

On my last trip to Paris, since we had already visited Versailles, we wanted to see one of the chateau around Paris and finally decided to go to Vaux le Vicomte. Getting there was easy, using the chateaubus shuttle from Paris to Melun station (they have the schedule on the website www.vaux-le-vicomte.com). We had a fantastic day-trip there. The castle... more

This chateau was an absolute delight. Highly recommend seeing it during their periodic candlelit evenings, when thousands of flickering candles inside and out recreate a stunningly enchanting scene from centuries gone by. Enjoy an interesting and beautiful tour of the inside, then stroll the magnificent gardens to a backdrop of music, perhaps with a glass of sparkling wine. Dinner on-site... more

I recently had a fantastic step back in time with my visit to the Chateau Vaux le Vicomte. 5 delightful hours were spent touring the castle and the extremely well kept gardens, reflection ponds and fountains. The belief that you can absorb the feelings of those of another era will grasp you as you view and walk the castle and... more

Rumor has it this was the inspiration for Fontainebleau. Whatever. It is a beautiful chateau, and well worth a visit in itself. The Sunday I was there, though, there were almost the same crowds as in Fontainebleau, though, apparently, not nearly as many Americans as Versailles. But the grounds were amazing, perhaps even more beautiful than Versailles or Fontainebleau. Oh,... more

If you're visiting Barbizon or Fontainebleu, try to include this stunning château (and allow 3 hours for a comprehensive visit, including upstairs to the cupola). You'll no longer wonder why Louis XIV had its owner, Nicholas Fouquet, jailed for the rest of his life and was goaded into building Versailles. This overwhelming house, the ceilings painted by Charles Le Brun... more
