The swing bridges are just great over such lovely rivers. Lots of fun for all ages to enjoy one way or other. Summer is fabulous as you can swim in the river too but a great place to visit all year round. Good parking and toilet/picnic facilities.

There are many walks around this area but the walk we chose was the 90 minute railway tunnel loop track which takes in some great scenery around the course of the river as well as the walk through the tunnel which is lit up during day light hours and is well worth your time. You can also cycle around these... More

The Karangahake Historical Walkway brought us back to the days when the extensive gold mine was in service. We couldn't help but marvel at the scale of the mine back in the 1800s! The ruins with information signs along the walkway it was like a museum. To walk through the Windows Track tunnels you must have a torch. Scenery of... More

We spent 2 hours plus on our walk through the gorge. Our actual intention was to take a bit of exercise but this became one of the highlights of our trip. I recommend parking over the bridge that is before the main carpark (coming from Paeroa) and begin your walk from there up the Waitawheta River. The mine shafts and... More

I've been visiting the Karangahake gorge since I was a kid. In some of the tunnels you can find glowworms and the views are gorgous. But remember to bring a torch!

We stopped here on our way through to mount maunganui. Just took a short walk from the car park to the train tunnel. Unfortunately when we got there the tunnel was closed, we did not see any information about this provided in the car park which was slightly disappointing but the other views of the mountains made up for it.... This is a great walk and experience, i have done it many times, with adults, friends, and family. We all love it and find it very interesting and definitely worth driving too and getting out for the walk. Lots of interesting history of that area to see.

Nice easy 14.6km bike ride along the old rail trail, lovely scenery and the 1km long old rail tunnel is a wonderful ride. Very easy going and the whole family could ride this very easily. great family day out.
