A great day out

Lots of tracks to explore with all the remnants of the mining still present, a tunnel full of glow worms and a cafe close by for a tasty treat

The gorge is beautiful; rapids in the river; tree ferns; delightful atmosphere; an old rail line with a tourist train if you like that sort of thing.

Cyanide tank stands, sit among the remains Victoria battery at Waikino. The battery was massive in its time and was built by the Waihi Goldmining Company back in 1897. The crushed ore from the Martha mine ended up in these tanks, which contained a solution of potassium cyanide and water to dissolve the gold. The gold was recovered after going... More

There are so many options for walks in the area - but you absolutely have to take a walk through the old railway tunnel, and don't forget to take a flashlight with you. The only downside we found was there were a few cyclists going through and I felt like I was going to be hit a few times. Cyclists... More

I get so excited about gold mining ruins. Half a day was not enough to see all that the Karangahake Gorge has to offer. All of the walks were high class, well maintained and safe. Plenty of informative sign boards all along the trails. If you have been to Newnes/Glen davis area near Lithgow NSW Aust and liked the shale... More

Just love this place. Whenever you go the scenery is always stunning. Full of Autumn colours at the moment. Great for biking or walking us walking for couple of hours this trip. Track was very busy with lots of families may have been due to it being Mothers Day as The Falls Retreat which was our next stop was also... More

This gorge area is beautiful. Great walking tracks. The bridge is just a short walk from the car park. It feels very remote - but very close to the main road. Beautiful photo opportunities in every direction. A popular spot with tourists.

We did 1 and a half hour rail tunnel loop. Good to go on a dry day as trail can get wet and slippery. The 1.1km tunnel is real dark, good to bring a torch otherwise it's still a good walk in the dark. Good view, an enjoyable trip.
