This little island is much more accessible and cheaper than Hainan. Easy to get to and definitely worth a visit. Gets crowded in Summer, but we were there out of season so it was relatively empty. Taxis will try rip you off, but motorbike taxis are inexpensive and there is a free bus(the blue one) that circles the island. Avoid... More

Driving down for about two and half hours from Zhongshan, Zuhai or Guangzhou, you come to Hailing Island. I love it! Nothing to do with horrible Hainan (Sanya), at least so as I experienced it. Unfortunately probably because of a lack of knowledge in tourism management Zhapo, the main coastal city is nothing but a dead place, especially at night.... More

Astonishing! Zhapo is fairly 'Chinese' and doesn't really cater for western tourists, but we found a small cafe opposite the main square which serves decent pizza and a full-english breakfast (with decent coffee) The fisherman's harbour is well worth a visit - it is massive, you can see and buy fresh fish as it comes off the boat, and (whilst... In 10 years time this will be just like Sanya, but more convenient to reach. Like Sanya, it splits into 2 - the old/cheap bit (Zhapozhen) and the swanky exclusive new bit (next to the NanHai 1 museum). Both have fantastic beaches and views

Took the motorcycle taxi from the bus station. This is a fairly new museum which houses the 900-year old shipwrecked Nanhai No.1 which was salvaged several years ago. We spent hours walking through this museum which focuses on the aspects of China's maritime history and advances in underwater archaeology. All exhibits were explained in Chinese and English. The salt water... More

The Silk Road Maritime Museum is housed in the new architectural designed Crystal Palace Museum on the 10 mile beach Hailing Island. An entrance fee of RMB80 per adult or RMB40 per child gains entrance. The museum depicts the salvage of the Nanhai 1 and its relics of jade and other trade. An interesting exhibit for an hour before exiting... More

The restaurant Italy Square was fantastic. The FIREWORKS until 2AM every morning is a nightmare. A true living nightmare. And no one gives a care.

Very sad only the rich will have access and the beach is being destroyed. Although the Provincial Government is trying to "fix" things it is a complex problem.

Precious pieces of cargo, especially ceramics are in display in the Museum a.k.a. The Nanhai No. 1 Museum. A lot more are waiting to be excavated. Display boards and video movies in all eight exhibition halls are informative. Audio guides are available free of charge. Help desk answers general questions and guides visitors. The Southern Song dynasty (13th Century) wreck,... More
