Having kayaked on this lake I found it to be very shallow and strong winds can rip throuh there from the hills. As there is mainly farmland and very little bush around the Lake it is not as interesting as some other lakes but the preservation of the Wetlands had encouraged the wildlife which is lovely to see.

A very quiet place with spectacular sunsets over Rimutakas range in Wairarapa. There are swans and native birds nesting around the lake. It's one of our favourite place.

This is the first time I have ever been disappointed with the views in New Zealand. The Wairarap Lake is murky and unattractive with no hills or pretty scenery around it. We arrived with a picnic and planned a nice walk, but there is nowhere really nice to park, and no trails for walking. There are apparently some bird hides,... More

Found the country drive really nice. Not many p,aces to get up close to the lake and when you do, it's muddy. Not too impressed except for the general scenery

This lake exits straight into the sea. The waves throw up an embankment, damming up the lake until it can burst through. Used to be a fertile eeling place until the lake was controlled for flooding. Well-known for whitebaiting. The beach is wonderful - dangerous, huge undertow, not for swimming, but it is wild and exhilarating.

This glorified slough is actually quite a nice area to hang out on a nice day. The Western Lake Road, down to Ocean Beach, is particularly nice. You can catch eels and barbecue them...yum. Visit Onoke Spit in summer.

Great if you have a bicycle and want to get away from the hills of Wellington. take a picnic with you and enjoy the tranquillity found at the lakeside.
