I honestly did not think it would be this good! Pick a clear day if you can, the views are amazing!!!! Peter the tour guide was the friendliest, most smiley man I've ever met! We learnt lots and really enjoyed the ride. Well worth it and your money seems to go to a really good cause.

We stayed in Coromandel for a couple of days to relax after 3 weeks of driving around NZ. The motel owner recommended the railway and told us a little of the history. A friend of ours is a mad railway buff, so we just had to go - even though it was showery all day. The train ride is amazing... More

We stayed in Coromandel (what a lovely town!) and our host recommended the railway trip. We had a really amazing experience. It was so lovely to go up the mountain on the train. The train ride is comfortable and smooth and the guide had the biggest smile on his face the whole time. It was so amazing to share something... More

We had a great afternoon at the Driving Creek Railway. The train ride takes in some absolutely breakthtaking vistas and the journey itself, thanks to its brilliant drivers is informative and interesting. Built almost entirely by a local artist and his various apprentices, it is a testament to ingenuity, creativity and sustainability (many of the walls are made from old... More

The railway is a delightful monument to one man's vision and achievement over many years. The narrow gauge railway has switchbacks, spirals, tunnels and even a double deck viaduct on its way up the re vegetated hillside up to the top station with excellent views from an observation tower. The commentary from the driver made for a pleasant trip.

What is there not to like? A self made man sets up a railway in a one horse town, he's a potter, an artist, a visionary. What a little gem of a spot! Our guide Pete was so lovely and informative. We loved it all, gift shop, train ride, views, mudbrick bottle toilets, pots everywhere, sculpture garden, art gallery....AMAZING PLACE!!!

A small train built mostly by hand up a very steep hill; a wonderful ride. We visited the railroad while on a trip to Coromandel Town. It was scenic, informative and a bit awe inspiring when you learn that is was mostly built by one man over a number of years. The switchbacks and loops neede to climb the steep... More

If your in the Coromandel this is a must see, or make it a day trip as you want be disappointed. The people are helpful and knowledgeable. After winding through beautiful native bush and past a retaining wall made of wine bottles the train stops high above the Coromandel township where you get the most amazing views over the Hauraki Plains/Gulf.... Unsurpassed views of the forest and landscape from the trains. Worthwhile if you're passing through. I didn't care much for the "station" (pottery studio?), which looked cluttered and messy - could however be the look they're going for.
