Minsmere is a great place to discover nature. The RSPB shop, cafe and visitor centre provide a perfect introduction before you explore the beautiful countryside walks. Enjoy stunning woodland, wetland and coastal scenery and close views of a wide range of wildlife, including many rare species. Families can begin their journey of discovery in the Wild Zone, or build a den in the Wildwood Adventure. The nearby Discovery Centre is perfect for school visits, birthday parties and exhibitions. Self-guided activities include a free explorer backpack to borrow, and there's a regular programme of events in school holidays. Seasonal wildlife highlights include: spring birdsong, nightingales and booming bitterns and nesting avocets; summer butterflies, flowers and nesting terns; autumn migrants, red deer rut and colour; winter ducks, evening roosts of birds and Christmas shopping. Volunteer guides are often available to help you identify Minsmere's varied wildlife.

This is such a lovely family day out. We visited for a second time recently and find it so relaxing. The walk on the beach is really nice, and our children really enjoyed the natural play area and den building in the woods. We were able to sit outside when we used the cafe and it is wonderful to watch... More

This is obviously a place which is set up mainly for avid bird watchers, but I don't know a coot from a crane (well its almost as bad as that) and I still really enjoyed visiting. The walks are beautiful and take you through so many varied and contrasting landscapes - woodland, heathland, wetland, fresh water, salt water, scrubland, and... More

Have been here several times but this was the first time we went with someone who knew about birds. Made the whole experience much more interesting. We took the red walk which is about 2 miles and stopped in various hides around the place. Saw quite a number of birds although disappointed on this visit not to see a Bitten.... More

We spent half a day following one of the trails to the east and north hides, with great views over the meadows and scrapes. The avocets have done much better this year, saw some yellow legged and Mediterranean gulls as well as godwits, redshanks, and eagrets. You need a day at least to visit all the site. Thought the shop... More

The reserve tries to reconcile many contradictory goals: habitat for wildlife with visitor experience, mecca for intense hobbyists with gentle day out for the casually interested, a place of quiet with considerable visitor numbers. On the whole, that balance is well struck. Definitely needs more toilets though.

Very well organised RSPB reserve with walks around different habitats and hides to observe the birds at various points along the route. Make sure you take decent binoculars and be aware that you will be the odd ones out ( as we were) if you don't also have very technical camera equipment.Very well organised and informative for children and the... I couldn't agree more about the bacon and sausage sandwiches. They are always my choice if I'm eating in the café. We always use locally sourced bacon, sausages and bread too. More

Ok first things first, if you're a non-member, you may find it pricey with an entry fee of £8 per adult. You may as well join up as an individual or family membership because you'll want to come back and explore more of what RSPB has to offer not just here but around the country. I've visited here many times... More

Went with husband and two young children (3 and 5), and it was fun for all. We all walked the 2 mile beach loop, had lunch, and played in the children's area. The highlights (for the kids) - taking turns carrying the minsmere kids pack - a backpack with binoculars, magnifying glass, bug container, bird book, and wildlife spotting sheets.... More

Thanks for your very thorough feedback. I'm pleased to hear that you had such an enjoyable visit to Minsmere, especially the children. Our backpacks always prove very popular, and it's great to see the faces of children when they tell us about the various minibeasts they discover. I will pass your comments on our menu to our Catering Manager. I'm... More

Good reserve with good birds, maybe too much importance given to Bitterns. A enjoyable circular walk around. Entering the hides can be like going into a church, very few people say hello. Go to any Yorkshire reserve and find out what bird watching can be like.

Ian B, Visitor Experience Officer at Minsmere, responded to this review

Thanks for your feedback. I was interested to hear that our birdwatching hides felt like going into a church. I know that many birdwatchers enjoying sitting in silence in hides, but this is not the usual experience here at Minsmere. However, this is not the typical experience of Minsmere's hides, unless the reserve is particularly quiet. We have a team... More
