Absolutely magic experience seeing the night sky from the Mt.John Observatory. Guides were excellent and knowledgeable AND we got a cup of hot chocolate! Amazing views of the sky. They pick you up right at the holiday park entrence. They provide very warm jackets. Looking at Saturn and the moon though the big lenses was awesome. They even provided hot chocolate on a very cold night. More

The implications from other reviews suggest that this is a place to visit only at night to star gaze (which must be wonderful as the stars are just astonishing in NZ). We went in the stargazing tour at 9pm. It was an incredible experience looking at saturn and mars through a telescope. Not forgetting loads of stars. Pretty expensive. Its actually a risk you take for if it is a clear day no clouds and no rain you get to see the beautiful stars and able to see them clearer through the telescope. This was one of our best experiences in New Zealand. We were lucky because the night we went was completely clear, still and not very cold so we had over 2 hours of incredible star gazing. Absolutely fantastic skies in Tekapo and the tour is a full 2 hours of gazing at the sky from the top of the hill and looking at interesting objects in the telescope. I would highly recommend. More
