The shrine underground just has to be visited. An opportunity to reflect on life and be at peace with your thoughts. It is sad that a minority of tourists ignored the no photography requests -they were simply rude. Thankfully they did not detract from the devotions and reflections of the true pilgrims.

You go there to live the experience of seeing the great saint, and you have the opportunity to do that. La Chiesa Inferiore were you will find the body of the Saint is nice with paintings on walls The upper chair is big & spacious, but it has to been architectural downfall. First of all acoustic is horribly, the altar... More

Although I'm not a believer, I enjoyed my visit here to admire the architecture & history. I speak & read italian so understood what was written .... If you don't you may need to pay for a guide. We also walked the Via Crusis - very serene. Although the signs say you can't take food or drink, ignore the drink... More

Really liked the fact that I didn't feel like I was being ripped off in the shops as there was something for everyones price range.

Due to a forced extended vacation in Rome, we added this to our trip, it was well worth it as we had often said that we would do it at some point. There was a special rate available on the train from Rome on Saturdays, a buy one get one free, so we elected to travel first class, for the... More

As a non-religious person reviewing this sanctuary is a little hard. I read about St. Pio's story and history and I felt this church was decorated beautifully. Especially the mosaics. The room where St. Pio body is kept is gorgeous. If you find yourself in San Giovanni this is definitely a stop you must take.

We stayed at the Hotel Grand Paradiso at San Giovanni Rotondo. It's only 3 mins' walk to St. Pio's Shrine, actually directly opposite, across the road. The whole place was full of pilgrims when we arrived. We all queued to venerate his remains. It was placed in the lower Church. The atmosphere was quiet and solemn here. Everybody reverently touched... More

As devotees of Padre Pio, we were very happy for the opportunity to attend Mass and see the body of our great saint. It is worth every minute. San Giovanni is a long drive from Rome; I imagine it is out of the way relative to most major cities in Italy, but anyone who is devoted to St Pio will... More

what a blessing to see and be able to pray by the body, still intact after 45 years, of Padre Pio. a great place to pray and get closer to the Lord. Mass and procession at night were intense.

Shrine is beautiful but the area around the shrine is overly commercialized. Parking is not easy, so if you stay at a hotel nearby, leave your car there and walk if you can (it is a long uphill walk depending on where you stay or park).
