50 mins by bus from Neuschwanstein Castle lies the Wieskirche, that riot of religious rococo famed as an example of where the swirling baroque transitions to the whirling over-the-top rococo, this is an art-history ground zero. From the outside, set solitary and sparse on its verdant cow pasture, the church is just another sedate pic. Step inside and you are... More

We called here late in the day and had the place to ourselves, which felt pretty special. There was a little café there so we had a drink and enjoyed the setting. The interior is a stunning work of art.

It was quite unusual. We were driving on a small road, bypassing cows in the fields that we were in and all of a sudden we see this gigantic church. Wow! How come such an illustrious church is to be found among cattle and farmers? The outside is beautiful, but the inside is way better! A magical world where everyone... More

Sometimes I can't figure out what UNESCO criteria is in granting world heritage status. This church, while beautiful, is nothing special. At least to my eye there's nothing to warrant such designation. You have to take a little detour off the main road of about 3-4 miles to reach it. Free parking. There's some sort of a souvenir shop on... More

A UNESCO cultural heritage building, lovely setting but once inside it is simply stunning and I challenge anyone not to be blown away by the finest rococo style decoration of this pilgrim church

Go inside and you'll see the beauty of the church. It's worth visiting even it's a bit aside from the highway.

Die Wies - The Wies Pilgrimage Church - is a true juwel and an amazing sight near Steingaden, located in the countryside about 50 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. The church dates from around 1750, and is built in rococo style. From the outside, it looks just fine, whereas the inside is really amazing and worth a visit. Tours are... More

One would never expect this little rococo gem in the middle of a meadow, but WIES simply means meadow. The Exterior won't give you a hint of its internal beauty. If you come during mass on Sunday, have a coffee and brotzeit at Gasthof Moser and wait until mass is finished. A must go when you are on the way... More

Who would guess this beautiful church would be out in the country away from any towns? The outside is just as interesting as the inside.

We LOVE to visit old churches and cathedrals, and this one certainly did not disappoint. It is absolutely stunning. I would definitely recommend for a visit if you are in the area.
