A well preserved "ruin" of a traditional castle. Generally easy access at ground level. Access to higher level is by an external wooden staircase. The castle has connections with To Richard III. Good views across the countryside.

I like ruined castles, so I enjoyed it. The children enjoyed exploring. Middleham is best known for its association with Richard III, but it is an interesting castle in its own right, with wonderful views of Wensleydale from the top of the keep. There is a small exhibition and pleasant staff in the gift shop. Not surprisingly there is a... More

Good bits: * Staff member in the shop/entrance was lovely, she was very friendly and helpful. * The site itself is beautiful and the climb to the top of the tower is worth it for the views. * Lots of places to sit and eat your picnic. * The site leaves the interpretation to the visitor - sometimes using your... We went based on the spread in Englush Heritage handbook. "Windsor of the North!" Let's be fair. It's not. We didn't buy a guide book as usually the EH properties have either an audio tour or good information boards. I think tbh our visit would have been greatly enhanced by a guide book as there are hardly any boards or... More

This is the castle where Richard I I I grew up. It is situated in a charming village and is well worth exploring. It is in a sufficiently good state of repair to take some time to see and there is a really good view from the top of the tower. There are some interesting pubs / bistros for lunch... More

Just as he's being reburied we went to see his family home. A lovely, huge castle, really massive with a moat. But maintained in a way that encouraged the kids to run around it exploring and being excited. Of coure we found 'olden days toilets' (kids are 8 and 6!), arrow slits, moats, towers and views. Perfect. We spent over... More

A magnificent castle set in the timeless village of Middleham. We visited twice with our three young children and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff are very helpful and it is an amazing experience to walk in the footsteps of the Neville family and of course Richard III. Well worth a detour and excellent value.

Love castle/fortresses and Middleham is one of the more genuine ones. Contrary to most reviewers I suggest they remove everything that wasn't there in the 15th C. All the signs and the information shed does not belong. It gives it a "commercial" look, depriving you of going back in time. The information booth should be outside the walls. Support EH... More

This is a great stop for anyone who loves history and the dales. A great hulking ruin in the centre of this stunning horse racing village. Amazing views from its walls as you look up to the Middleham Gallops to watch the racehorses training. This was Richard the thirds home and is a great setting for the only Yorkshire king
