If you are looking for a guided tour of this battlefield, I suggest you use the excellent tour guide at Isandlwana Lodge, Rob Gerrard. Even if you go on your own, it is a unique opportunity to put yourself in the middle of an important historical event.

We were lucky enough to have Pat Rundgren (google his name) as our guide and spent a great day walking the battle site and discussing the tactics and errors of the day. Well worth a visit but do have a good guide as I think you would lose so much without someone to explain it to you.

Great to hear about the history of this battle and to imagine it. Sad to see all the piles of white stones where those who lost their lives are buried.

Ideally this should be done with a guide to understand the significance of the place, what happened, when, and what all the cairns mean. Truly heartbreaking - regardless which side you would have been on.

Seems we might have had the same guide as others (Paul). He was certainly a great raconteur; and brought the battle and the travails of all to life.

We stayed at the wonderful hotel overlooking the battlefield (see separate review) and were shown around by the resident guide. Rob talked us through the battle in comfort from the hotel perched high on the rocks where the Zulu commander controlled the battle. He then drove us down to the site and saw the cairns and areas where the various... More

Enrolled the services of a good guide 'Evan Jones' from Dundee. About a 40 minute journey I would recommend a car with good ground clearance if not a 4 x 4 as our VW Jetta struggled with some of the bigger rocks and more severe road cambers - just glad to get it back to the Hire company without ripping... I have always wanted to visit the Zulu battlefields since I was a boy. Having read several books and seen the films I thought I knew most things about Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift - but I was not quite prepared for how little I knew and how interesting and thought provoking my visit would be. All the credit must go... More

Truely memorable.. You need a guide that brings it alive. Make sure you communicate with them prior to your arrival, to gauge this. (Battlefieldsregionguides.co.za). Charges vary per tour and are based on whether they use your vehicle or theirs. Rorkes Drift not as enjoyable as nothing remains other than a couple of rebuilt buildings (which are not even in their... More
