Prepare yourself to get a little lost on your way. It is a bit difficult to find the right track in the beginning- but be sure that there will turn some one up and offer you his help to guide you. We gave 200 rup to a nice farmer who sent us in the right direction. Drink a cup of... More

Well, this is a good two hour trek directly up but it is well worth the workout. From the summit you can see all over the country. I was told that on a clear evening you can see the lighthouse on the cost.

If you are in Ella, ya gotta do it. A lot of the walk is along the train track and then a small bit through tea plantations before the last steep bit (maybe 30min) through sparse pine forest. The views are great. Go early before it gets too hot and the crowds start coming. You don't need a guide. Ask... More

Ella rock is beautiful, you walk during 3h (go and back). You go through tea plantations and a river. I would recommand to take a guide (just start walking and you will find a villager who will show you the path) because there are snakes and you have to walk on the railway. Be carefull: normal tips for a guide... More

If you go down the hill from Ella to the temple and cave about 1.5km down the hill you can climb up to the cave which is spectacular and then continue on up to Ella rock. It is quite a climb, difficult and overgrown in parts, you will need a guide. Lasitha fro the village was great. Much quicker than... More

long hard climb, especially the last segment up the rock. take lots of water and snacks and look out for the dog half way up that acts like your personal guide!

We walked up to Ella Rock in May and were interested to see if we could make our way there without a guide. I agree with other reviewers who have said a guide is not required. The map posted by the previous reviewer is helpful as is a tip by another reviewer - 'just keep walking up the hill'. For... More

Ella Rock is an easy hike for a very nice reward at the end: the view in the Rock is amazing. The way to go is easy with the attached map but if you do not have it there are blue painting marks showing different directions, but they all go all the way to the Rock). Be careful with the... More

I agree with others who say get there the earlier the better, as the mist (or rain) closes in quickly in these parts - I experienced a nigh total white-out at the top at 10am. However I'm not sure I agree with those who say one should dispense with a guide - the hotel provided an excellent one for for... More
