This is a must do in Ella. The entrance is off the main road with a sign saying "Ella spice garden" follow the sign to the family house. We booked on the day, the course is from 5pm - 8pm. The teacher of the course was the family son he was fantastic, he was patient and was happy to explain... More

Never intended to do a cooking course here but saw all the great reviews and couldn't go past it. 2000 rupees is a bargain given we arrived at 5 and it was nearly 9 when we left, not to mention all the food! A great course over all, very informative and very tasty food!

We attended Mr. Madusanka's Cooking class in his home in Ella last night and what a great experience! It was a great way to get introduced into the culture and food of Sri Lanka and we met a really nice couple too! (There were only 4 of us in total -- a nice small number) I do love to cook... More

I love to cook and have done many classes while travelling, I did this one thinking that I might not learn anything new but at 2000 rupees was worth a chance. I ended up really enjoying the course, I learnt a new 'Sri Lankan' way to make Dahl, learnt about how they make curry powder, coconut sambol and how the... More

The cooking class was great. Firstly, we learnt a lot of interesting stuff about different spices. We then learnt how to cook different Sri Lankan currys. The instructor was very nice and patient and spoke very good English. The best part was eating the food afterwards, which was more than delicious. Highly recommended!

A pretty small spice garden, but yet it was really nice. The owner have us a tour and was really sweet and nice. The spice garden is a very nice place to visit if you are just walking around the beautiful Ella.

We were welcomed in the living room with cardamom tea and before we went to the family kitchen, got an introduction into the spices used in Sri Lankan cooking. This included both a round through the garden as well as an indoor 'class room' session. Paper and pen were handed out for taking notes and writing down the recipes later.... More

To us one of the best things to do in Ella. Chandika madusanka is a humourous, passionfull, enthousiastic young boy who will explain and demonstrate how to make 3 curries. (Did you know it takes 20 cloves of garlic per person for a garlic currie?) After aiding in the cooking it is dinertime. We had wonderful company: a France family.... More

My girlfriend and I recently attended the cooking class along with an unknowm, but nice french couple (a maximun of 8 people are allowed in class) and had a wonderful experience! Firstly we were given a tour of the spice garden, followed by a general introduction to Sri Lankan cooking before embarking on some cooking of our own. Although our... More

We did not try the cooking lesson. We only went there to discover different spices. The "presentation" lasts 15minutes, you pay 100rs per person. There are about 10 little dying bushes in the so called garden. Then you can buy some spices "from" his garden, but are actually from somewhere else. Wait for the final: we bought 50g of cardamon...
