We are very interested in plants and animals, so we decided to join Chris for a trip to Mou Waho. We had perfect weather, a cloudless sky and no wind at all. We would have preferred a slightly smaller group, but it was still an amazing day. We learnt a lot about Lake Wanaka from Chris, and Mou Waho is... More

Chris is a man with a passion. Passion for what he does, the ecology of the lake... it's flora and fauna, and we were lucky enough to have him share it with us. We chose the longest cruise on offer and Chris made sure our trip was amazing. It is one of the best trips we have ever done. the... More

We're two friends from Singapore and arrived in Wanaka not knowing what to do. Our lovely host at the B&B recommended Chris and we jumped at the opportunity of going to an uninhabited island. On the boat ride to the island, which took about 20 minutes, Chris impressed us with his extensive knowledge on the geography of the land. He... More

What a contrast to 6 millioin people on an island called Singapore! So happy to give you the pristine wilderness you craved in your dreams of the NZ you hoped you would see! Not a house in sight! Magical. So rare these days, anywhere in the World... More

My husband and I visited NZ last March on a 25 day trip. At every town where we stayed, we went to a remote beautiful site and saw the varied glories of NZ. All the guides were good and passionate about the land. But , at Wanaka the tour with Chris was so special and personal. Right from the time... More

I did warn you about the pigeons... Not the sharpest tool in the shed as they say... Being the size of a small turkey at least you can hear them coming... And such beautiful plumage for ceremonial cloaks, highly prized for their food value - And sooo easy to catch,.. Duh... Great to have you experience this phenomena! More

Al certainly is an asset to Eco Wanaka! We are so lucky to have the best outdoor guides in the country, local and working in the elements that they love- people, and nature! These to go together with the magical story of NZ's unique natural heritage. So thank you for your glowing post, we really appreciate your feedback, getting you... More

We did the 4 hour Mou Waho Island which consisted of a boat ride on the lake to the island, a nice moderate walk to the little lake on the island where tea was served then on to the highest point for a great view then back down to the boat, planting a tree on the way and back to... More

The seeds that that tree was propagated from, came from that very island! We bring out authorised seed collectors to take seed , then propagate them in DOC authorised native tree nurseries, then we buy the trees back 5-7years later to plant on every trip. Many of our people give donations to this fund, totally devoted toward re-establishing the original... More

Hiking to a lake on an island on a lake on an island with our guide Chris Riley will be a lasting memory and significant highlight of our family’s trip through New Zealand. We love having kids on our "Treasure Island" - They are such sponges to natural history if you can present it in a fun way, every turn on the way up this magical island is packed with new vistas and stories, let alone the nosey Wekas trying to pinch a cookie! More

My husband and I decided to do a personal guided hike to Rob Roy as we were hesitant to risk our rental car on unsealed roads and didn't want to be restricted by the bus shuttle timings. In the end we could have managed the drive . But we had no regrets with the guided hike as we learnt far... More

Allen is part of this forest, he knows so much about it! You obviously got one of the rare times the road and the 5 odd river fords were low, and the pot holes and washboard corrigations weren't too bad. We use 4WD vehicles to traverse this 2 hour return drive up the valley, definitely not suitable for large Campervans... More

Yes, many plants, have adapted to the browsing of NZ's apex herbivore- A 250kg bird called the Moa! This bird did the same job as the Kangaroo in Aus, the Wilderbeest in Africa - except it had no cutting beak, and had to swallow the plant leaves whole. How, over 83 million years the plants adapted/figured out the right foliage... More
