For a change of pace, take this drive. It's dramatic in a different way and doesn't take much time to check out.

The drive is very short.. only two to three miles. The road is also very narrow, so you have to be cautious. The river flows below the road. There aren't much stops to pull off the road. You can go down to the river and take some photos. Not sure if swimming is allowed.

Firehole Canyon Drive is a great way to escape the crowds if ever in Yellowstone. The drive follows the contours of the Firehole River, and in some spots there are places to swim along its banks. I didn't swim but did get my feet wet in the water for a while, just relaxing and taking in the beautiful scenery. Do... More

Lots to see here, with swimming and tubing available in the shallow, swift current. Very narrow roadway, but very beautiful.

This drive seemed not well traveled, but it was so worth our time. There are plenty of spots to pull off and get up close to some of the features.

Firehole Canyon Drive is a 2 mile one way road just outside the Madison Junction along the Firehole river that provides a peek into the heart of Yellowstone without all the regular two way traffic. The canyon itself is beautiful Summer or Winter. There is a spot you can pull over and park to view the water falls and take... More

We have been visiting this beautiful canyon for 50 years. Not all that long ago the swimming hole was only known to park employees and locals and very private. The climb down from the road was tricky but the water was a little warmer than usual because of the thermal basins up river. Now there is a boardwalk/stairs and signs... More

This was a pleasant side trip off the main road. It has great views and a fun little swimming hole/beach! We weren't brave enough to get in, but others were swimming. It's well worth the time.
