You must time it right to get to see the Great Fountain Geyser. It erupts every 10-14 hours and goes for about an hour. We literally just missed it; came in at the tail end. But the drive was still worth it. The Firehole lake was a beautiful, smokey, mysterious-looking stop in all the steam coming off the hot lake.... More

Rode through Yellowstone on a road bike and made the wise choice to detour up this canyon drive. Very picturesque 2 mile mostly uphill one-way road along the Firehole River. Waterfalls and cascades to the right the entire way. Several areas to park cars along the left. At the end is a public swimming area where you can take a... More

You can go swimming in the river just downstream from all of the geothermal areas, and there is a beautiful waterfall in this same canyon.

It is so beautiful and serene back here, and worth the 2 mile detour off the main loop road. If the weather is warm, bring your swim suit so you can wade in the river. The thermal waters flow into the river upstream to make it warmer. We did not swim, but there were a TON of people who were.... More

The title says it all. Save this short drive off the main road for late afternoon, then watch the colors as the sun sets to the west behind the geyser. Which goes off every few days, but the eruption is not what you're there to see, it's the way the light plays on the rings around the geyser hole in... More

The drive is beautiful. The swimming area was cold, apparently the hot springs do not drain into the river now as they have in the past.

Our kids think the highlight of our 4 days in Yellowstone was swimming in the Firehole River off Firehole Canyon Drive. It certainly isn't a private swimming hole (plenty of crowds) but the kids thought it was a blast. Some sort of water footwear is recommended. The rocks are slippery and tough to navigate barefoot.

We didn't. It refers to the old mountain men's use for valley. So this is the Fire Valley Canyon Drive. Guess what they have in this Valley. Yes...thermal activity. Geysers, hot springs, etc.

This was a very beautiful drive. There is a spot to pull over and look at the falls, but there is also a nice big lava flow formation to check out at the same spot. My wife was a bit nervous about the height, but we managed to make it to the swimming hole. There were vehicles lining the road,... More

I think some of the reviewers are muddling Firehole Canyon Drive and Firehole Lake Drive. This is a review of the former. We didn't go to the Lake Drive. The road starts just south of Madison junction. You drive through the Firehole Canyon which has huge waterfalls and rapids. At this point I was thinking I won't be letting my... More
