I had the privilege of visiting the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in August of 2013 with three of my good friends. From the "true country" dirt roads to the miles of nothingness pastures and back to the homey gift shop, visitors center, and cafe, I was in complete bliss. The place is so well taken care of yet still... More

On a recent road trip hurtling through South Dakota following a riding holiday in Montana, I saw a billboard saying that the BHWHS was 14 miles ahead. I was thrilled, as I'd missed going to two other mustang sanctuaries earlier as they were out of my way. An amazing place, a great find! Wild and free, with entertaining signage, and... More

We had a fantastic private tour from Mark. He was very knowledgable of the sanctuary and the history of the area. We would highly recommend a private tour. Request that Mark be your guide.

I found the sanctuary through a random google search, then checked out their website. Liking the idea that all proceeds stay within the sanctuary, I booked a 3 hour tour for my husband and me. It seems a bit expensive ($150/person), it is more than worth the private tour in a 4x4 vehicle and air conditioning in the SD summer.... More

We would've loved to have taken the private tour, but at $60 a pop for adults we just flat out couldn't afford to work that in. We wished we could've because the money goes for a great cause and we loved their philosophy. The kids tickets are much more reasonable at $7. I wish they would make the prices something... More

We went on a private tour with Gary and we had an amazing time. We got right up to wild mustangs and other horses and saw some awesome scenery. Well worth it. Little gift shop and place to eat with ice cream and sandwiches after. Most people sit on a school us for the tour but they accommodated us very... More

The drive to the sanctuary is 15 miles from the main road with the last 3 on gravel. Then we saw the sign that said we could take a 2 hour bus ride to see the horses. Since we were already committed on the road we continued but knew we had not allowed enough time to take the bus ride.... More

I planned my entire trip to South Dakota around the sanctuary and I was not disappointed. When I signed up for the three hour tour I assumed it would be me and a few other people along with the guide and if we saw any wild horses they wouldn't come very close to me. I couldn't have been more wrong.... More
