A beautiful monument to those who Illinoisans who served at Vicksburg. The monument reminds me of both the Pantheon in Rome and the tomb of President William McKinley in Canton, Ohio.

You can see it from a distance, this National Monument, when you are driving on the tour road of the Military Museum. Stop and take the majestic stairs to the inside of this monument. Its impressive, beautiful and has a great view on the surrounding battlefields.

The walk up all those steps is worth the view! I thought this monument and the Cairo were very cool sites. Take the time to check them out!

I'm very interested in the Civil War and have been to most of the Civil War parks. The visitor center has a good film on the siege and surrender but, the visitor center is very small. The park has a nice driving tour with lots of monuments but lacks trails. The best part of the park is the USS Cairo... More

You could spend a full time seeing all the battlefields and memorials. The USS Cario is the best part, amazing to see the remains of the boat.

Incredible the long list of soldiers that died in this battle. The cost of the building was and still being for me ridiculous I will give all that money to the family of all those man that died for the great cause but death. And sure they didn't get nothing

We saw where they stood. We saw where they fell. We saw the statues and plaques and monuments to their lives and beliefs and victory and defeat and their deaths. I heard in my heart the hymns they sang at Sunday prayers and the terrible thunder of the cannons and the prayers of the dying and without shame my eyes... More

We were on a tour bus, so we did not have the time to stop and walk up to the Monument. We slowly drove by it. There was complete silence on the bus as we (mostly northerners) gazed respectfully at the Memorial. It took my breath away. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I have been... More

It's actually called the Illinois monument interestingly enough but it is an amazing structure with the names of every solider from every Illinois regiment in the Vicksburg campaign of the civil war plus your voice echoes awesome!
