We recently toured the Academy of Arts on our Oahu visit earlier this month. We had been there several times before, but never get tired of going there. The building itself is a treasure, with its many patios, beautiful gardens, wrought iron gates and interesting statuary. A plus for us is our free admission through our reciprocal membership in the... more

If you are ever in Honolulu the last Friday of the month, check if the Honolulu Academy of Arts is holding Art After Dark. It is a themed party held by art students between 6pm and 9pm. Me and my sister went in April and had a blast. The theme was Flowers and people who wanted to had to look... more

We visited the Academy before heading off to the Shangri La tour (Doris Duke's estate - tickets booked through the Academy). The Academy is worth a few hours of one's time. They have all sorts of collections, from European and Middle Eastern to Chinese and Japanese. They also have a lovely collection of Hawaiian and Polynesian art. We principally focused... more

This is a nice art museum, and a great way to break the pace of the often crowded & loud Honolulu sites. Has a range of Asian, European and Polynesian art. Also has a great Chinese garden, that is very peaceful. They have a wonderful cafe that is a great spot for lunch, but make reservations! We went on a... more

I went to this museum because it is the starting point for a trip to Shangri-la; the Doris Duke Estate. I highly recommend that tour, and included with that ticket is your admission here. We took the first tour of the day to Shangri-la, returned to the museum, had lunch and then toured around a bit. We had plans for... more

This museum is a quiet respite in Honolulu. It houses an interesting collection of Asian art, along with a smaller collection of European and American works. I found the architecture of the building and courtyards just as noteworthy as the art. The Academy has delightful cafe and gift shop as well. Definitely a much needed change of pace form the... more

Fantastic art museum. A must see. Great collection, facility & presentation. Surprise was the absolutely wonderful dining experience at museum cafe. Was like eating in a 4 star restaurant. If you go to this museum you must have lunch. Cafe only open 1130-230. Also wise to make a reservation as it fills fast. Is popular with downtown Honolulu business set.... more

This is the best museum in Hawaii. Their permanent collections are on par with some of the better museums on the mainland, and some special exhibits are very nice as well. It will take a few days to see the entire collection, but you can hit the highlights in an afternoon. Recommended. more
