In every room it seems as if Doris Duke, in all of her eccentric glory, is still nearby.

In 1922, Rough Point, which had been built in 1887 for Frederick Vanderbilt, was sold to James Duke, heir to one of America's tobacco monopolies. James' daughter Doris, then aged 10 and an avid swimmer, immediately fell in love with the site: a rocky promontory jutting out into the turbulent Atlantic. For the remainder of her long life (she died... More

Coming from New Jersey, I am fascinated with Doris Duke and was really looking forward to seeing her house in Newport. And although the grounds and the house itself is truly lovely, I couldn't help but be disappointed by how much of the furniture was under cover - basically all of it. Don't get me wrong, they correctly call this... More

Our guide was very knowledgeable about Doris Duke and the mansion. While all the furniture and decor was covered, it was still a fascinating view of the home, the Cliff Walk in that spot, and the grounds. I hope to be able to go back for the more traditional tour!

We visited Rough Point on a rainy and windy December day. This house was a nice contrast to the opulence of the Breakers but was filled with amazing and beautiful works of art, pottery and rugs. The bonus was the view from the solarium with a memorable view of the Atlantic. Our guide was a lovely young woman, informative and... More

Interesting tour. They show different rooms than in the summer. The furniture is covered w/ sheets. Gives you a glimpse into one of Doris Duke's homes that she actually lived in until 1993. say the Kitchen and received a treat. Grounds are gorgeous. Will come back in the summer.

Rough Point is my favorite home to visit in Newport. Formerly owned by Doris Duke, this home has wonderful views of the ocean and the exquisite interiors are just incredible. Did this tour with my two daughters (10 and 7) and we had a great time. Docent was very knowledgeable and really made my girls at ease during the tour.

Very disappointed that no photos were allowed inside, Not sure if that is true for other mansions in Newport. If you want to take photos, you should inquire in advance. Otherwise the tour was average. Our guide Linda was knowledgable. It takes only 75 minutes and at the end you are shown the door out. The house and its furnishing... More

This mansion tour is done with a guide, not a digital headset. The display of Ms. Duke's art and antiques is quite intriguing! The landscaping and grounds at Rough Point are probably the best of all the mansion-museums in Newport. Highly recommended tour.

We visited the Elms, Breakers and Marble House. I highly recommend them all but my absolute favourite was Rough Point. The tour guide was extremely knowledgable, the furnishings were breathtaking and the house and setting beautiful.
