I happened to come upon this mansion tour through TRIPADVISOR. Had no knowledge that it existed because it is not part of the Newport Mansion tour package. Since we had previously toured all the other mansions we needed to see this one after reading the reviews. The grounds were beautiful despite the fact that construction is going on with repairs... We have been on ~ half a dozen Newort Mansion tours. This one was the most expensive, but worth every penny. John was our tour guide, and he was excellent. He knew everything, the history of the house, every art item, and especially what a fascinating lady Doris Duke was. She was a very generous and brave woman. John knew... More

Oh Doris if these walls could talk! And I wish they did tell of all the intrigue of her romances and such thing like her BF that was accidentally run over (killed) by her Hmm What a place don't miss it!

No as elegant as The Breakers or Marble House, but almost a "liveable" property. You are guided thru the property so it is nice to be able to ask questions. There are just a few items for sale - mostly books -- at the entrance.

We had an amazing tour and tour guide who had amazing intimate knowledge of Doris Duke and her life at Rough Point. Incredible grounds and view. Definitely worth stopping by

Our innkeeper suggested a visit to Rough Point mansion and we are glad we visited. Although we could not imagine living in such a large space, I think I could learn to be comfortable there with her sense of decorating style and the big ocean out back. ;-) It was a docent lead tour and he was full of information... Loved this home on the outside. Enjoyed the tour because its led by a live tour guide. The house is a mish mash of styles and the solarium downright sad. I get that it's the original furniture but the brown terribly worn stuffed couches ruin the room. Interesting to see appliqué restoration of valences in progress. Ms Duke may have... More

We have gone for a tour at Rough Point during our "Fall New England Annual Trip" for each of the past two years. Each time we have been amazed. The preservation is marvelous and the decor is wonderful. What a magnificent American Architectural treasure.

Here is a mansion that has been open for touring just ten years. While not as well known as the others, it's interest lies in the fact that it was occupied by the owner until the mid-1990's. Here is a mansion that has been updated for contemporary living yet has the same feel as the ones lived in decades ago.... More
