One of the most beautiful, livable home there. Doris Duke had several homes, but lived here most of the time. At the end of the tour they show clothes that she wore and pictures of her in them. They are right up to todays fashion for the 'Red Carpet. The house is spread out on a point, so you have... More

Beautiful home and 75 min tour led by a knowledgable guide. Well worth your time. This home is just how Doris Duke left it and you really get a view of her taste and personality. There are some beautiful furnishings, exquisite plaster work and some important artwork. Stunning views of the coastline! It's a house not to be missed.

What a wonderful home/mansion. You see how the 1% lived in the early part of our centuary right up to the 1990's. It is amazing the artworks in the home. The property is the most fantastic on the entire Newport Coast. Doris Duke did so many wonderful things through her charitable works. Yet, it seems that there was something missing... More

Our tour guide was so soft spoken, and mumbled to herself so much, even in a tour of only 12 people, hard to hear. Tour guide could not complete a sentence without "um, ah". Counted 32 of them in one room alone. After looking forward so much to seeing this property, quite a disappointment. I left the tour and got... More

There are so many mansions to visit in Newport but this is more like a house. Unlike the other mansions where the original owners went broke and sold things off (so the current decor is an "interpretation"), Rough Point is exactly as Doris Duke left it when she was alive, so you really feel like you have insight into her... My wife and I visited Rough Point Mansion and took a guided tour. It was expensive - $25 each - but well worth it. The tour lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The tour guide was both humorous and very knowledgeable; he made the principle character - tobacco heiress Doris Duke - come to life. The building itself is... More

This house should be the last house you see as it is breathtaking. Not part of the same preservation society as the other "cottages," the entrance fee to this house is completely separate and you can pay at the door (around $30 pp). Built on the corner of where the waves intersect, Rough Point, is one of the homes of... More

While taking a tour of Rough Point you will learn about the tobacco heiress, Doris Duke, and her importance to the Newport community. She played an important role in saving the mansions from the Gilded Age as well as the historic homes in Newport.

The mansion tour was very interesting and informative without being too detailed. The docent was very knowledgeable and helpful. Be sure to add in enough time to walk the grounds and enjoy the ocean views.

We visited Rough Point and really were interested in the story of Doris Duke. She was quite unique and not materialistic considering her wealth. She was really interested in preserving things that were in the best interest of people and animals and especially in preserving Newport.
