Rough Point, the Newport home of Doris Duke, is simply fabulous. Well worth the $25 admission to immerse yourself into this fantasy world of luxury. But it's luxury that you can imagine, not the overwhelming opulence of The Breakers (both are Vanderbilt houses). But Rough Point was purchased by Doris' father and Doris later put her unique stamp on the... More

Unlike the mansions that are operated by the historical society of Newport, there is a separate $25 entry fee for this Doris Duke home, formerly a Vanderbilt mansion. The four other mansion we visited had recorded tours that for the most part are extremely well done (see my reviews of them separately), Rough Point has guided tours. Rosalie was simply... More

Doris Duke might be one of the few to be considered American royalty. Definitely worth taking the guided tour of the home that she lived in till her death in 1993. Definitely take the time to explore the grounds and the gardens. Absolutely magnificent!

This home sits on the point overlooking the Cliff Walk, near the end of Bellevue Avenue. It was built by Frederick W Vanderbilt and later was the home of the Duke family; most recently Doris Duke. When she passed away she left her home and its' belongings to the Newport Restoration Organization to manage and care for. This was one... More

A wonderful tour lasting about 75 minutes that tells a detailed life story of Doris Duke. The mansion and it's furnishings are beautiful. The location of this mansion is that of its name...Rough Point. Gorgeous views of the point.

Doris Duke's mansion was a pleasant surprise after all the turn-of-the-century palaces. I could really live in her mansion--it is on a much more human scale than the others and gives the visitor some insight into her unique personality. We can thank her for most all of the preserved houses in Newport and also for her wonderful furniture museum down... More

Visited here yesterday on a beautiful Summer day. Have been to many other Newport Mansions but this one was special. Completely furnished as the wealthy Doris Duke left it. Wonderful artwork, tapestries, furnishings, grounds, design style...and the view!!! Meticulously maintained. Included some of her clothing...a very personal glimpse into the lifestyle of a glamorous philanthropic woman! Our tour guide Maureen... More

We had just planned to visit Newport for the day, but returned the next day to tour Rough Point. Glad we did. Our guide was excellent. Art, architecture, lifestyle, landscape views, interesting stories about camels, dogs and neighbors and Doris Duke's impact on Newport preservation. .Well worth the admission price.
