The ocean drive offers views of unusual beauty, albeit on the rough side. Hard winds in a spectacular landscape.
This was a very enjoyable car ride on a sunny Spring day. It is a short drive along the water with a few stop-offs. I'm not sure if it is an absolute must-see while in Newport. If you have lived anywhere near water you may not find it all that special. It is similar to many other shore drives. Having... More
Put the family in the car and drove. Allowed everyone to see a glimpse of the water and many beautiful houses. There is a stop mid-way around the tip where you can park. We walked down to the water and collected rocks and such with the kids. Wish we had brought our kites as many people were flying them there.
It's a nice drive with some nice ocean views but we wouldn't say it was fantastic. We think there are many other ocean drives in Maine and Rte 1 in NH that are just as good if not better. That being said, what we found interesting along the way were the beautiful homes, the Castle Hill Inn and Lighthouse and... More
We enjoyed glimpses at the many beautiful private houses along the road and stopped to enjoy the view at a scenic overlook by Brenton Point State Park. There were two monuments there one seemed to be Navy related and one seemed to be related to civilian sailors/fishermen. The Navy one was surrounded by a fence for restoration work so I... More
Being a 'Newporter', I try to drive-around "Ocean Drive" once-a-week. And I usually 'drive-the-Drive' on weekends... & relatively-early in the morning, say before 7:00. I also start-on the 'Bellevue Avenue' end... which takes me past Doris Duke's home ("Rough Point"), & then around the Drive... because I like having 'the sun at-my-back', thus avoiding any glare 'in-my-eyes'. It's normally 'very-quiet'...... More
...beginning near Fort Adams and drive Ocean Drive all the way around the peninsula to Bellevue Ave. It is a pleasant drive of about 15-20 minutes of scenic shorelines. The homes along side of you may make you think that the world is unfair, but the architecture is amazing, and the views of the ocean and the waves crashing is... More
This paved walkway takes you behind the mansions right next to the high ocean cliffs. It isn't dangerous and really has great views of the backyards of the largest Newport mansions on one side, and the wild ocean on the other. Now is the time to go before the summer crowds come. We could not go the whole (3 mile?)... More
Best done by car, there are places to park and enjoy the great views of Narragansett Bay and out into the Atlantic Ocean. Many 20th c. artists were so inspired that they painted the rocky shoreline and ocean from here.
