IMA (San Juan Islands Museum of Art)

A short walk from the ferry, IMA is the first art museum in the San Juan Islands. Along with a revolving repertoire of major exhibits of fine visual arts and workshops, IMA also offers a forum for local artists to display their work as part of its Artists Registry.

IMA raises and distributes money to support art in the Friday Harbor elementary and middle schools, and runs the popular free "Family Art Days" program every Saturday in July and August in the orchard beside the museum.

IMA is a registered 501 C 3 nonprofit organization and depends on donations, memberships, fundraising and a cadre of experienced, capable and dedicated volunteers.

IMA has produced over a decade of exhibitions and lectures at various locations but now this newly built museum gives artistic culture a permanent home. Be sure to stop by when you are in Friday Harbor. The museum is only 6 blocks up Spring St from the waterfront. There are 3 different exhibition spaces that are usually curated for 3... More

This is quite the surprise when it comes to a small museum. We were able to see Michael Dailey's work and it was stunning. The woman on the desk, Patricia Bolding was full of knowledge and passionate about art; what a joy. I was able to buy a book @ Michael Dailey that wasn't available any where else. What a... More

I visited this museum for the first time, It is a very small museum, but well worth the time spent there. The scale was right for a small community, a friendly, fun, attractive attraction.

Even though small, the museum is very professionally done. We lay on the floor in the Atrium exhibit and had this really nice experience of what it would be like to lay on the ocean floor with water, currents and sounds floating above us. It was a lovely.

Full disclosure...my wife and I are Docents at IMA. The artists brought in to display for the public, free of charge, is simply outstanding. You'd expect to find this gem in Seattle, San Francisco, or New York but here in Friday Harbor? No way. Well guess what? WAY! It's an easy walk up Spring Street from the ferry terminal. Take... IMA (San Juan Islands Museum of Art) is a short walk up the main street of town from the ferry dock. It’s a small, but very professional, arts museum housed in a beautiful modern glass-fronted structure near the top of Front Street. The San Juan Islands are known as an artist community and I believe this is the islands’ preeminent... More

I visited Friday Harbor today and and went to IMA for the first time. I was blessed to be able to see the Susan Middleton "Spineless" exhibit. Wow, I was in awe! I saw images of creatures I have never heard of or seen in my life. There is also an amazing woodcut exhibit by Luigi Rist. The door to... More
