Great place to take a break after the Alamo. It has much historical significance (the Rough Riders were recruited here for the invasion of Cuba) and cold beer. A place that cannot be missed as it is a truly authentic place amongst a very touristy area.

It is a beautiful old bar made almost entirely of dark wood. President T Roosevelt did business there in a small loft. It is said that there is bullet holes shot by the President and a wannabe Rough Rider you can see and touch. Also, the story is Carrie Nation, an alcohol Prohibitionist, came in with her axe and split... More

This is a beautiful bar(oldest continuously operated bar in Texas) modeled after the House of Lords bar in London, full of intricately carved dark wood. According to the knowledgeable bartender, the last remodel of the bar was in 1877. Since Teddy Roosevelt used the place to recruit the last of his Rough Riders before going up San Juan Hill, there's... More

After reading the reviews we decided to visit on the day we went to the Alamo. We were at the door when they opened and had the place to ourselves for a while. Nice original woodwork. We also took a walk through the hotel lobby which is beautiful and saw the hotel courtyard as well.

We stopped here after a visit to the Alamo and were so glad that we did. Both my hubby and I enjoy visiting historic sites. The Menger did not disappoint. So much to see and read about, especially about Teddy Roosevelt. A read treat.

Heavy wood, well mixed drinks, friendly bartender. Everything I like in a bar. The history is just a huge bonus. It could use a top notch cleaning as there's a musty smell as if the carpets got wet awhile back.

You are not going to get a margarita here ! Historic and neat . . Ask the Bartender about the bullet holes and the history behind it . . Great photos and artifacts of Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders .

I loved how the bartenders were so friendly along with other people who came in there, it is a tiny little bar but thats another thing that I liked about it! Only bad thing, there comes a time when they have say "last call"!

If you want a bit of history, check out this little bar. It is history to a T. The staff are wonderful. Renee and Jeff are as wonderful as the last time I was here. This is the best place in the entire hotel.
