Cold drinks and lots of history

Great place with fun history to duck into to cool off. The drinks were very affordable and it's was comfortably dark inside. Worth a stop for sure!

We had to stop by and see the bar where Roosevelt and the rough riders met. Everyone including the patrons were very friendly and being inside the bar feels like you are stepping back in time to another era.

My husband and I were staying at the Menger Hotel and were excited for the opportunity to have a drink where FDR recruited his Rough Riders and many other historical happenings. The drinks were cold and done just right. The bar tender (whom my husband spoke with during our time there) was informative and spent just the right amount of... More

It is mainly the history that has brought me here with friends before. A classic bar that has changed only a little since TR's time in decor. Standard drinks and fare. This is not a touristy thing with displays and such but an historic place. There is no tour or show. Mainly grown men that are history buffs and wold... More

Stopped in to eat lunch where Teddy R recruited his Rough Riders! Very dark little bar. Really friendly bartender who gave us fair warning that ordering food meant pretty long wait as food comes from inside the hotel. We each ordered sandwiches and my friend's came out wrong. Got a bit of a stink eye when I refused to take... More

Neat old bar with a lot of history in it. Small and Dark but that is part of the charm. Bar staff very helpful on recommending places to go.

This is a must stop on your visit to San Antonio. Wonderful historic bar where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders many years ago. Wonderful staff that are eager to please and will serve you well chilled cocktails, and answer any questions that you might have about the Alamo which is right across the street. Lots of great stories of... More

We went to the Menger Bar when we first arrived in town. The bartender was great. She mixed an awesome bloody mary and was very friendly and helpful about things to do in town. The bar is kind of small but very interesting with lots of history. Would recommend it as a must see.

Good for a beer and the historical value. The ladies at the bar were great and recommended a great place for BBQ called Augie's.

Great place to take a break after the Alamo. It has much historical significance (the Rough Riders were recruited here for the invasion of Cuba) and cold beer. A place that cannot be missed as it is a truly authentic place amongst a very touristy area.
