The San Antonio Zoo was first established with a donation from George W. Brackenridg in the 1800s. Two of the first cageless exhibits in the U.S. opened here in 1929 and the bird collection is one of the world's largest. « less

new rule that you are breaking is a lone elephant needs to be housed with at least 2 other of the same kind. You say she will be left alone and no other elephants brought in. Elephants are herd animal. This is elephant is lonely and this is what is wrong with zoos. Money over the welfare of the animal.... More

Loved the Zoo. Wish we could have had more time. The staff was excellent in helping and answering questions. One of the best yet!

Despite having been to San Antonio dozens of times, this was my first zoo visit. We went on the last morning of our trip, thinking we'd just spend a half-hour or so there, due to the heat and not expecting it to be that great a zoo. We were really surprised by how nice all the exhibits and enclosures were,... More

Had a great morning visit to the San Antonio Zoo today. We were able to get in at 7:30am, since we have a season pass (highly recommend), and see all of the animals and visit the petting zoo (pygmy goats) without much of a crowd to contend with. By the time it started getting hot at 10:00, we were on... More

My wife and child like zoos much more than I do, so we went. We got there shortly after opening in anticipation of it being a very hot day. Many of the animals were not out and those we could see were hiding in the shade. Since it was also too hot for us, we didn't spend a long time... More

I was sure that there were regulations in place regarding elephants having company as Lucky was on display when I visited, alone. So I googled it and it appears that there are regulations but this zoo does not wish to comply. It keeps a single elephant in solitary for no good reason! Elephants are herd animals? So, I googled why?... More

I had to check out the San Antonio Zoo while I was here this week. It is a great zoo with a lot of nice exhibits and animals. It was hot today so many of the animals were in cooler spots and out of view. Great views of Elephant, Rhino and big cats. Sad to not find any giraffes here... More

First, a disclaimer. I don't really enjoy zoos that much. Now that I got that out of the way I have to say that my visit to the San Antonio Zoo was actually fun. I had an enjoyable experience. Predictably, the zoo was somewhat crowded but still enjoyable. The exhibits were very well maintained and the animals seemed very active.... More
