We visited Madera Canyon for the birds and it did not disappoint. Driving along the road, we already stumbled upon a Phainopepla, Pyrrhuloxia, Black Throated Sparrow, Rufous Crowned Sparrow and a Red Tailed Hawk. After parking at the Proctor Road Parking Area and paying the $5.00 fee, we walked down a trail and found more birds. Moving up to the... More

We stayed at the Santa Rita Lodge, which is actually a collection of cabins along a creek at 5000 ft. The owners have bird feeders and it is a very relaxing place to watch birds, and is also a great base for side trips. Bring groceries, the nearest store or restaurant is 20 miles.

We visited in the morning for a walk along the paved, accessible path. It's very well-maintained and offers great views of the surrounding area and nearby vegetation. We saw many caterpillars, cactus in bloom, and two deer wandering close to the path. We did not venture of the paved path so our visit was brief--about an hour. The accessible path... More

We've been here many times over the years, always during the Fall thru Spring season, so I can't say what it's like in the Summer. It's off I-19 from Green Valley, down a dirt road that becomes paved once it starts up the canyon, where it's narrow & often congested. The Forest Service charges a $5 day-use fee if you... More

We only had time to hike for for an hour or two. Chose a hike recommended by someone that pulled up in the car next to us. :). Super Trail was more gradual but still a nice workout at 5800 feet. Lots of trails to choose from and we will definitely go back next year. Only came across 4 people... More

The Forest Service is doing a great job managing the canyon along with the friends group. Lots of parking and a nominal fee to enjoy a daytime of hiking and picniking.

Took a 5-mile circuit starting up Old Baldy Trail and returning on Super Trail. Old Baldy is quite steep, so a good workout. Super Trail is more gradual. The trail is quite wooded and shady, which helped keep us from overheating.

numerous trails allow for different levels of activity. parking was very difficult and it wasn't the busy season . get there early or later in the day. I would consider taking taking the tram and hike down if you have the ability to take the hike.

We had been recommended and given the drive (quite a way from the interstate) from tucson were really disappointed. The scenery is really not very scenic and the trails a bit boring as they mostly are hidden in the trees. Lots of camping and human settlement. Sabino canyon in tucson is more scenic and unspoilt. Not worth the trip
